A Shift in Cinematic Dominance: China Leads Global Box Office
Ne Zha, a Chinese mythological character with extraordinary powers, took the 2025 box office by storm, leaving major Hollywood franchises in second and third place.
In a year marked by significant film releases, none achieved the multibillion-dollar box office impact seen before the pandemic. The Fantastic Four, Superman, dinosaurs, and the Na’vi failed to top the charts. Instead, science fiction and children’s films dominated.
Ne Zha 2: The Rebirth of the Soul
According to global box office figures compiled by IMDb, as of the last weekend of 2025, Ne Zha 2: The Rebirth of the Soul was the highest-grossing film, amassing $2.15 billion worldwide. It also became the most-watched film in Chinese history and the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
Disney’s Zootopia 2 and Lilo & Stitch also secured box office totals exceeding $1 billion, placing second and third globally, respectively.
Projected 5% Growth for 2026
Gower Street Analytics forecasts that the global box office will reach $35,000 million in 2026, marking a second consecutive year of growth with a 5% increase over current 2025 estimates.
“We predict that 2026 will be the highest-grossing year globally since 2019 ($42,300 million), surpassing the recent peak in 2023 ($33,900 million),” explained Thomas Beranek, chief analyst at Gower Street.
Beranek attributed this growth projection to Hollywood’s production schedule for the upcoming year.
“There is an extraordinarily strong lineup of releases for 2026, driven by established franchises with highly popular series such as Avengers, Spider-Man, Toy Story, Dune, Star Wars, Super Mario Bros, Minions, Jumanji, Scream, and The Fockers, along with highly anticipated titles not part of existing franchises like Michael (a biographical film), the live-action Moana, and new projects from legendary directors with proven box office success such as Christopher Nolan (The Odyssey) and Steven Spielberg (The Day of Revelation), among others,” said Rob Mitchell, head of the cinema division at Gower Street.
