The funeral will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals, in St. Peter’s Square. Despite its solemn nature, the liturgy will incorporate simplified elements as per Pope Francis’s wishes.

Burial Location Outside the Vatican

Following the mass, a funeral procession will traverse Rome’s streets, passing by iconic landmarks like the Colosseum before reaching Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, chosen by Francis for his final resting place.

This marks the first time since 1903 that a Pope will not be buried within the Vatican. His grave will feature white marble, the inscription “Franciscus,” and a replica of his pectoral cross.
