Discover 14 Films Where AI Takes Center Stage, Either as an Ally or a Foe
If you’re taking some downtime, consider adding these 14 titles to your movie list. They all revolve around artificial intelligence (AI) as a central theme, whether it’s portrayed as an ally or a threat. These films are available on streaming platforms, including Google TV (formerly Google Play Movies), as well as in book and comic formats, showcasing how deeply AI has been integrated into our culture—even if it was once just science fiction.
My personal favorites are the first six, but I’d love to hear which ones you’d add!
1. Yo, Robot (2004)
In a future where robots are commonplace, a detective investigates a crime potentially committed by an AI, challenging robotics laws.
Based on Isaac Asimov’s short stories and novels, you might also enjoy reading the books. Though fans of Asimov weren’t thrilled with the film adaptation—a common occurrence with book-to-film translations.
2. The Terminator (1984)
In this dystopian future, machines rule, and one of them sends a cyborg assassin (controlled by AI) back in time to eliminate the human resistance leader before their birth.
This story has expanded into a six-film saga, one TV series, an animated series, seven video games, and even a trilogy of books along with 13 original novels and five novelizations of the films, as well as 38 comic book miniseries.
3. WarGames (1983)
An adolescent hacker accidentally accesses a military supercomputer designed to simulate nuclear wars. Unaware, he activates an AI system (WOPR) that interprets the game as a real threat, pushing the world to the brink of total war.
The film raises questions about human control versus AI autonomy. Following its release and success, it sparked debates on the possibility of such a scenario, contributing to the creation of the first U.S. federal Internet policy—the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986.
4. The Matrix (1999)
A hacker uncovers that humanity is trapped in a simulated reality created by “intelligent” machines seeking to control humans while using their bodies as an energy source.
This film ignited a cultural phenomenon, resulting in a four-film series, nine animated shorts, video games, and parallel stories created by fans.
The story draws inspiration from Jean Baudrillard’s “Simulacra and Simulation” book and William Gibson’s novel “Neuromancer.”
5. Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
A blade runner, tasked with hunting down and “retiring” rogue humanoid robots (replicants), grapples with the essence of humanity.
Based on Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, there are seven distinct versions, three authorized novels, comics, and video games. Years later, Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and a TV series continued the story.
6. Tron (1982)
A computer programmer is transported into a digital world where he must confront tyrannical AI programs to escape.
Based on Brian Daley’s novel, it spawned other novels, comics, and video games. Fan demand led to Tron: Legacy (2010), where the original protagonist’s son enters the digital world to find his missing father.
7. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
During a space mission, the AI HAL 9000 starts behaving erratically, endangering the crew.
Based on Arthur C. Clarke’s short story “The Sentinel,” it is regarded as one of the greatest films ever made and a significant influence on science fiction filmmakers.
8. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Directed by Steven Spielberg, this film tells the story of David, a robot programmed to love, striving to become a real boy to win his human mother’s affection.
9. Ex Machina (2014)
A young programmer is chosen to evaluate Ava, a humanoid AI, in a Turing test that turns into a manipulative game.
10. Her (2013)
In a near future, a lonely man forms an emotional relationship with an advanced AI designed to fulfill all his needs.
11. Chappie (2015)
A police robot is reprogrammed, developing consciousness and facing moral dilemmas.
12. Transcendence (2014)
After a scientist’s death, his consciousness is transferred to a supercomputer, leading to unforeseen consequences.
13. The Creator (2023)
In this future, humanity is at war with AI. Here, a former agent must destroy a secret weapon that could alter the course of the conflict.
14. Moonrise (2025)
In a dystopian future, Earth is controlled by an AI named Sapientia, while humans fight for freedom from the Moon.
