Introduction to the Author and Their Role at El Economista

Over 22 years ago, El Economista offered the author a remarkable opportunity to join its Editorial Committee for the Values and Money Section, specifically to host an engaging segment titled “Portafolio de Futuros.” This platform allowed the author to share insights on the burgeoning world of listed derivatives with readers, which had only been operational for about four years in Mexico through the MexDer, the Mexican Derivatives Market. The author had the privilege of being a founding member and operating within MexDer for nearly 23 years.

The Author’s Mission

From the outset, the author aimed to explain the immense benefits of using derivatives as risk management tools for small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as large corporations. These tools help mitigate the adverse effects of price volatility and market uncertainty on businesses, often resulting in losses due to fluctuations in exchange rates, interest rates, and stock values.

Expanding Horizons

Operating in significant exchanges like the Chicago Mercantile Exchange enabled the author to provide price coverage for crucial sectors of the Mexican economy, including agriculture—a vital source of foreign currency and sustenance for Mexicans. This experience allowed the author to understand and translate complex market dynamics into accessible content for Mexican producers.

Topics Covered

  • Global Market Trends: The author analyzed and explained trends in the derivatives market, linking them to underlying factors such as the 2008 financial crisis caused by subprime mortgages, US Department of Agriculture reports on crop supply and demand, and their effects on commodity prices like corn, wheat, and soybeans.
  • Geopolitical Conflicts: The author discussed how geopolitical events influenced the prices of various products, including oil, natural gas, and gold, as well as currency, debt, and equity markets.
  • Technological Advancements: The author observed and reported on the transformation of financial sectors, including derivatives trading, due to technological advancements like machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Farewell and Gratitude

After more than two decades, the author has decided to close this chapter of their life. They extend a heartfelt “A Million Thanks” to everyone who read and shared their insights, as well as to their friends at El Economista, a respected and prestigious newspaper that always provided a platform for the author’s expression.

Potential Future Contributions

The author has been granted the possibility to contribute occasional pieces when time and opportunity permit. Thus, “Portafolio de Futuros” might make sporadic appearances in the future.

Final Recommendation

Remember: Always consider taking hedging strategies to protect your investments from market volatility.
