Introduction to Vöx and Her Debut Album
All My Friends Are Ghosts is a reconciliation with the past and a process of self-discovery. Vöx’s debut album is a musical biography and a reflection of three stages in the life of the American composer, writer, and visual artist from a small town in Minnesota, now residing in Porto, Portugal. The album, titled All My Friends Are Ghosts, was released in 2025 after a long gestation period. Some songs began as early as 2007, while others were composed much later. Vöx revisited old notebooks with unfinished lyrics and compositions, realizing that many of these old songs still held emotional truth.
The Album’s Concept and Influences
Vöx conceived the album as a three-act narrative: childhood, adolescence, and present. The album became a way to honor her past selves rather than abandoning them. Vöx started writing music in her teens to process emotions, sharing some songs on MySpace without considering it a career – she simply felt the need to do so.
Her first EP, I Was Born, was released in 2017, followed by This Body in 2020. Vöx’s music has been inspired by artists like Tori Amos, Feist, Imogen Heap, and Conor Oberst, who shaped the emotional honesty in her compositions. Artists such as FKA Twigs, James Blake, Kendrick Lamar, Rosalía, and Kimbra have influenced her approach to sound design and embodiment.
Album Structure and Collaborations
All My Friends Are Ghosts transitions from ambient and minimalist textures in “In Their Image” to a rougher, more percussive electro sound, achieved with the help of Alex Tanas and Anwar Sawyer.
Structuring the album this way allowed Vöx to show compassion for her past selves instead of judging them retrospectively. It reflects the true nature of growth, not in a straight line but through chapters.
Healing and Autobiographical Themes
For Vöx, the album was a creative healing process and self-discovery journey. She realized how much compassion she felt for her past self, understanding that she wasn’t broken but adapting. Many behaviors she once felt ashamed of were survival strategies.
Through music, writing, and art, Vöx aims to establish various dialogues and invite listeners to see the world from the perspective of neurodivergence, disability, and autism. Music was her way of understanding herself and the world.
Collaborations and The Veil
In the EP All My Besties, Vöx engaged in a musical dialogue with other artists. Blackbird Blackbird, Ben Sloan (The National), Karen y Los Remedios, Drum & Lace, and LouLabelle reimagined Vöx’s songs, creating a shared emotional experience.
The Veil, Vöx’s newsletter, is another creative outlet. It has helped her find a community and a quieter space for contemplation, allowing her to explore new topics and ideas. Buddhist concepts of impermanence and equanimity have guided Vöx, reminding her that it’s better for things to unfold naturally rather than forcing meaning.
