A Cultural Blend: Nochebuena in Mexico

“We are here tonight, spending wonderful Christmas,” said Paul McCartney, encapsulating the spirit of Nochebuena in Mexico.

On December 24, we celebrate Nochebuena, a Christian tradition rooted in the commemoration of Jesus’ birth. In Mexico, this significant date has been enriched with a rich mix of customs and beliefs, giving rise to a festivity of profound cultural and family significance.

Beyond its religious origins, Nochebuena has evolved into a moment of unity, love, and shared celebration among people of diverse beliefs. In some cases, it includes the final posada of the season.

Family Gatherings and Cultural Expression

The family dinner, gift exchange, and togetherness are central elements of this festivity that, over the centuries, has absorbed pre-Hispanic traditions and secular elements, creating a unique and vibrant celebration.

The Nochebuena dinner is more than just a party; it’s a cultural expression that brings Mexican families together around a table laden with iconic dishes like roast turkey or pork loin; bacalao a la vizcaína; romeritos with mole and shrimp fritters; tamales with various fillings; pozole, salads, and desserts like buñuelos. Often accompanied by cider, sparkling wines, and ponche. While these delicacies are the most common, each region has its variations and traditions.

Despite the growth of the middle class, unfortunately, many families’ economic situations limit their access to these dishes, highlighting the need for fostering solidarity and mutual support.

The Flor de Nochebuena: A Pre-Hispanic Symbol

A flower that adorns our homes every year during this season is the emblematic Flor de Nochebuena. Its Nahuatl name, “Cuetlaxóchitl,” takes us back to the pre-Hispanic era. The Aztecs cultivated it as an ornamental flower in their gardens, and during colonization, Franciscan friars in Taxco, Guerrero, continued this tradition, incorporating it into religious celebrations of Jesus’ birth and Easter.

Thus, the Flor de Nochebuena became a fundamental element of our December traditions, blending pre-Hispanic roots with European customs.

Music and Villancicos: A Musical Tradition

Music is a crucial part of the Nochebuena celebration. Perhaps the most iconic piece is the Austrian-origin villancico, “Noche de Paz,” written and composed in 1816. It has been translated into over three hundred languages worldwide, making it the most popular of all time.

Global Challenges: Finding Comfort in Nochebuena

Sadly, this Nochebuena, many homes worldwide and in Mexico will face sadness and fear.

The loss of loved ones, jobs, assets, and the feeling of insecurity will leave a profound void in their hearts.

Beyond the pain, fear extends like a shadow over an increasing number of people. Fear, the antithesis of love, is a bitter emotion that arises when perceiving danger. As a primitive response to threat, its purpose is to protect us, but it can also paralyze us.

The loss of a beloved one, whether a daughter, son, sibling, parent, friend, or spouse, is one of the most painful experiences we can face in life, especially when it occurs through forced disappearance or unexpected death due to escalating violence, lack of medication, or medical care.

To all who suffer, we wish a Nochebuena filled with consolation and strengthened hope for better times.

Violence: A Social Corroder and Peace: The Only Vaccine

Violence is a virus that erodes social fabric. The only vaccine is peace, the fruit of concord and dialogue.

Concordance is the path to achieving peaceful and harmonious social coexistence. Practicing concordance facilitates the attainment of consensus.

Let’s stop the destruction of social fabric; it’s a task for all. Don’t allow the dismantling of the culture of peace.

Wishing All a Merry Christmas

¡Feliz Navidad a todos!
