Introduction
In a recent column, I expressed my thoughts on the relaunch of the “new” National Action Party (PAN). However, I need to establish this event as the starting point for today’s column. Following the PAN’s announcement, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s president, criticized the right-wing party for transforming during a challenging time due to national emergencies caused by torrential rains leaving hundreds of thousands displaced. Sheinbaum stated, “They could have waited 15 days until the emergency passed. This speaks to their lack of sensitivity.”
Morena’s Actions and Controversies
The next day, Morena’s plurinominal diputado Sergio Mayer organized a tribute to the Sonora Santanera in the San Lázaro legislative chamber, celebrating their 70 years of professional career with lawmakers dancing to La Boa and El Mudo. Veracruz diputado Sergio Gutiérrez Luna justified the honors by calling the Sonora Santanera a “cultural institution” and danced with his wife, “Protected Spouse.”
While the legislative dance appears more serious than the PAN’s repositioning, Sheinbaum did not criticize the dancers’ lack of sensitivity or Cuauhtémoc Blanco’s irresponsibility for attending a legislative session via video call during a break from his padel game. Instead, she responded with “Let the diputados define it” and “Let them set their rules,” mirroring those she should have called out for betraying the 4T and lacking sensitivity in current circumstances.
Morena Figures and Controversies
Prominent Morena members who discredit the party and seem to betray President Sheinbaum include her colleague Adán Augusto López Hernández, accused of causing 800 million pesos in damage during his tenure as Tabasco governor, according to audits presented to the National Audit Superior Council yet uninvestigated. Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña, on leave, serves as an unofficial ambassador to Palestine via the UAE, enjoying private jet travel and recently acquiring a 12 million peso house in Tepoztlán, Morelos, claiming personal austerity confusion with public policy. Additionally, José Ramiro López Obrador’s 13 ranches remain unaddressed by Sheinbaum.
Corruption and Oversight
There are instances of betrayal through commission, like the huachicoleros’ corruption, and omission, such as Rocío Nahle’s failure to timely warn about the Cazones river’s overflow, describing it as “slightly overflowed,” downplaying the flood’s severity. In both cases, Sheinbaum has remained silent.
The Question of Protection
The question isn’t whether Sheinbaum recognizes the presence of traitors and corrupt individuals around her, but why she protects them. Either she receives orders or tolerates the “circus” to maintain the ‘unity’ of a project that could unravel.
As things stand, the 4T doesn’t need opposition; its allies are efficiently doing the dirty work that once required the efficiency of Mexico City’s drainage systems.
