The Rise of Hegemonic Power and Extreme Nationalism

As 2025 concludes, a palpable sense of fear envelops much of the world. This year marked Donald Trump’s resurgence in promoting a single hegemonic power amidst an atmosphere of confrontation, alongside the return to protectionism and extreme nationalism.

The tension is not merely between Western liberal culture and Islamic fundamentalism but also a struggle to restore the legitimacy of authoritarian regimes facing democracies ravaged by increasingly attractive populist leaderships for various social sectors.

Rejection and the Risk of Global Conflict

The rejection of foreigners, differences, and anyone not conforming to new reliability standards set by leading this illiberal revolution creates a path towards conflict among various populist and autocratic regimes incapable of reconciling differences, willing to use violence to impose their will without concession.

Historically, we’ve witnessed military clashes between two authoritarian regimes or a democratic state versus an absolute caudillo-based system. It’s nearly impossible to find a conflict between two democratic states due to their institutional capacity to resolve differences. The strengthening of single-individual-dominated governments brings us closer to the danger of a larger conflagration.

Mexico’s Political Turmoil and Global Context

Mexico is not immune to this reality. The process of democratic dismantling began in 2019 and continues under the second floor of the 4T. By the end of this year, all autonomous bodies that were part of the failed attempt to construct an effective democratic system have been dismantled, and the upcoming electoral reform will seal a return to one-party dominance.

Morena brings us back to the Echeverria era, though with a party apparatus lacking the capabilities and skills of the 1970s priismo.

International Conflicts and Mexican Challenges

Internationally, 2025 will be remembered for persistent armed conflicts like those in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as the resurgence of irredentist nationalism and threats from the world’s superpower. For Mexico, political polarization, uncontrolled violence, and economic stagnation paint a grim picture with few prospects of overcoming the fear induced by this return to the past.

Global Trends and Falsified Arguments

Globalization brought technological revolutions and the necessity of opening markets and democratic models in the West. However, those who lost the privileges of authoritarianism and protectionism are back, aiming to destroy any political mechanism that might offer even the slightest chance of losing power. These are times of darkness and imposition of false arguments presented as unquestionable truths.
