Historical Context: López Obrador’s Experience in 2021
Despite the heated political climate, those in Palacio recall that in 2021, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador faced a significant setback when the opposition stripped him of the qualified majority in the Chamber of Deputies at the height of his power.
They also remember that in 2027, the midterm elections will not only choose 500 deputies but also elect 16 governors. Although the judicial reform will have modernized the entire electoral system by then, they are cautious as reality often brings surprises.
Morena’s Preparations and Concerns
President Claudia Sheinbaum, national leader of Morena Luisa María Alcalde, and Secretary of Organization Andrés Manuel López Beltrán have a work plan, but they anxiously consider their prospects, given that in 2021, even a seasoned hunter like the former president nearly missed his target.
Authoritarian Tendencies: A Looming Concern
Official and unofficial voices of the government and its party have dismissed denunciations of actions taken by governors and Morena figures against freedom of expression, attributing complaints to a campaign against the Republic’s government.
In this space, authoritarian tendencies of the ruling party have long been criticized, and such actions are considered authoritarian threats to freedom of expression by the governor of Campeche, the governor of Puebla, and other Morena figures.
Palacio has rejected censorship of freedom of expression, implying that it does not share the authoritarian tendencies of many groups within the party. Perhaps it’s time for the Presidency of the Republic to contain authoritarian impulses within the government and its party.
Refinery Construction: Accountability for Illegal Operations
A simple Google Maps search revealed that the construction of the illegal refinery discovered in Coatzacoalcos by the security cabinet began in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Two years later, the clandestine refinery was already producing fuels. Given the number of liters stored when the security cabinet intervened – 500,000 liters of crude – the productivity of this illegal refinery using stolen Pemex crude surpasses that of the López Obrador-backed Dos Bocas refinery.
If we don’t know whether to cry or laugh about the looting of Pemex, what if we send the convicted culprits to a nearby prison and have them manage the Dos Bocas refinery in shifts daily? Their proven efficiency might help Pemex recover some of its losses.
Whirlpool Notes:
The Federal Attorney General’s Office announces an investigation into possible links between organized crime and Guanajuato’s mayors and deputies. It would be a poor situation if they initiate the investigation because Guanajuato is governed by a PANista. They might argue that investigating Michoacán, Nayarit, and Chiapas mayors’ links to crime could tarnish Morena’s image… It will be challenging for the President Sheinbaum-desired 20 laws to pass in just 10 days of the extraordinary session… Ana Laura Magaloni, a jurist, was right; the INE suffered from the Judicial Reform… Excellent advice from Baltazar Gracián: “make your own things pleasing, let the unpleasant ones be done by others.”
