Introduction

The U.S. policy imposed on Venezuela by President Donald Trump, aiming to force oil deliveries to the U.S. and pave the way for primary invasion, has repercussions on Mexico’s energy policy.

The U.S. Policy and Its Effects on Mexico

Despite the risks, in light of the need to boost domestic crude production, Mexico announced adjustments to its petroleum policy for the six-year term. These adjustments include facilitating private investment in Mexico’s national oil company.

Investment Opportunities: Mexico or Venezuela?

With Venezuela, possessing the largest crude reserves in Latin America opening to private investment, the question arises: where will these investments go – Mexico or Venezuela?

Mexico’s Geopolitical Stance

Mexico is not alone against Trump

The upcoming visit of Colombian President Gustavo Prieto to the White House, along with Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva’s refusal to join an anti-U.S. front in Latin America, confirms Mexico’s prudent foreign policy.

This also validates the argument that this space has been making for months: Trump’s anti-T-MEX rhetoric is merely campaign talk to impress weak hearts.

Washington understands, and understands well, that President Claudia Sheinbaum has made it clear that Mexico belongs to the economic and political bloc of North America. Furthermore, within a year, when Trump wins the 2026 legislative elections, he will triumphantly announce that he convinced Mexico and Canada to renew the T-MEC.

CDMX’s Waste Separation Mandate

Curious Government Action in Mexico City

The Mexico City government’s decree mandating citizens to separate waste was published in the capital’s gazette on the same day it took effect, January 1st.

While citizens are already accustomed to waste separation, the new rule requires them to sort waste into different bags: one for paper, another for cardboard, another for bottles, another for metal cans, and another for organic waste.

The rationale behind complicating citizens’ lives, who previously only separated organic from inorganic waste, remains unclear, especially since only recently were 50 new garbage trucks announced to enforce the new rule.
