Lorenzo Meyer’s Proposal to Exclude Former Regime Operatives

Historian Lorenzo Meyer suggests that President Sheinbaum should not rely on or tolerate individuals who were recently part of the old regime. He proposes to “prescindir de los operadores fogueados del viejo sistema,” or in simpler terms, to exclude seasoned operators of the old system.

This proposal echoes the advice given to Luisa María Alcalde when she was appointed as the national leader of Morena, urging to “purgar a Morena de conversos y aliados oportunistas.” However, this proved to be an unfeasible task in reality.

Meyer’s Suggestion for New Political Personnel

Meyer further advises to “confiar en los puestos de responsabilidad a gente socializada en la política nueva” and to “prescindir de los operadores fogueados en el viejo sistema.” This appears to be a last-ditch effort to negate changes in continuity.

Aftermath of Ximena’s Murder

A press release from the internal affairs department of the SSC in Mexico City announced the suspension of police commanders due to alleged irregularities in handling evidence related to Ximena Guzmán and José Muñoz’s murder, Clara Brugada’s secretary and advisor.

The press release was issued after news leaked that two commanders were under investigation for “altering the crime scene and moving items thrown by the assassin.” However, such public handling of evidence seems to imply potential unfairness towards the two police officers.

The Exclusive and Legitimate Use of Force

For the coalition of forces that Morena amalgamated, with a strong ideological content from the left of the Republic and all the weight of past experiences of repression when facing the governments of the last century, there is a certain reluctance towards the constitutional use of force.

This was evident in the previous administration, despite numerous political achievements, translating the lopezobradorismo’s poetic narratives of struggle into the mundane task of governance proved challenging. The only outcome was a toxic laissez-faire approach to security matters.

Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum’s new regime has faced the challenge of combating criminal bands. Regrettably, she must persuade her party-movement that constitutionally using the legitimate right of force might be crucial for success.

In the Whirlwind of News

Omar García Harfuch’s lengthy presentation to the partisan leaders in the Chamber of Deputies lasted quite a while, with no objections… Although not prohibited by law, Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, Morena’s Organization Secretary, publicly announced his preferred candidates for the Supreme Court.

G.K Chesterton’s insightful quote, “having the right to do something does not mean it is right to do so,” resonates here, reminding us of the importance of ethical considerations alongside legal permissions.
