Who is Morena, and Why Are They Relevant?

Morena, short for Movimiento Regeneracion Nacional, is a left-wing political party in Mexico founded by Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) in 2014. After winning the presidential election in 2018, Morena has gained significant influence and power within the Mexican political landscape. The party’s ideology centers on social justice, anti-corruption measures, and a rejection of neoliberal policies.

The New Political Regime and the Term “The People”

A prominent analyst offers insight into the term “the people” as used by Morena, their allies, and the entire officialdom of the new political regime in Mexico. While they appear to address the humble and popular sectors, a deeper analysis concludes that they refer to an abstract, amorphous entity over which they, the morenistas, claim exclusive knowledge of thoughts and needs.

This situation echoes what British historian Paul Johnson termed “the two great aberrations of the twentieth century.”

The Largest Elections in Mexican History: 2027

The upcoming elections in 2027 are set to be the largest in Mexican history, with 17 governors, 500 federal deputies, and numerous mayoral and local representative positions up for grabs—totaling over 2,000 seats.

The current government and its party, Morena, are preoccupied with the “austerity republican” concept, seemingly neglecting the challenges of organizing and conducting these massive elections while aiming for the “cheapest in history.”

They might be betting on a reform electoral proposal in February 2026, which would strip citizens of election control, eliminating the only guarantee for election integrity and cleanliness.

The Partido del Trabajo (PT): A Valuable Ally

Internal strife within the ruling party is becoming increasingly apparent, just as unity is crucial to prevent nurturing the “snake’s egg.” The Partido del Trabajo (PT) has decided to be a useful companion, not only in Zacatecas but wherever needed, strengthening its position with more seats and becoming an indispensable ally for Morena.

Notes in Turmoil

  • Claudia Sheinbaum’s Generous Gesture: The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced she will donate her ticket to the World Cup opening match at the Azteca Stadium to a young football enthusiast, signaling a potentially balanced decision by Morena in Chihuahua.
  • Strengthening Bonds in Chihuahua: Rumors suggest that Sandra Chávez’s campaign bonds are being fortified to secure her the mayoral position in Ciudad Juárez.
  • Economic Indicators: The Buen Fin and December shopping seasons may contribute to achieving the annual growth target set by the Mexican government.
  • Reflection from Ramón de Campoamor: The Spanish poet’s insightful quote, “Liberty does not consist in doing what one wants, but in doing what one ought,” serves as a thought-provoking reminder.
