Key Foods See Price Reductions, Except for Diet Staples
In August, the price of avocados experienced a decrease, making guacamole and other traditional dishes more affordable, as reported by the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) from Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
Affordable Guacamole
That creamy, vibrant green guacamole, a chef’s delight and the perfect accompaniment to tasty tacos, became more budget-friendly in August due to a significant drop in the price of its main ingredient: avocados. The INPC reported that the aguacate price decreased by 7.36%, contributing to an overall consumer price index advance of 0.06% and placing the annual inflation rate at 3.57%.

Key Foods Central to Mexican Diets Show Price Increases
Despite the stabilization and notable reductions in various fruits and vegetables, as analyzed by “México, ¿Cómo vamos?”, some essential foods in the Mexican diet have shown price increases, particularly during the start of the national patriotic month.
- Beef price saw an annual variation of 17.74% and a monthly change of 0.7%
- Chicken price decreased by -4.6% last month but is 4.4% higher than a year ago.
- Eggs experienced an annual increase of 5.02% and a monthly decrease of -0.4%
- Milk saw an annual increase of 8.65% and a monthly increase of 0.4%
- Coffee had an annual increase of 21.55%
- Packaged juices had an annual increase of 8.18%
Salsa Mexicana’s Ingredient Price Fluctuations
The analysis also highlighted that the pico de gallo or Mexican salsa reflects varying effects on the prices of its ingredients. The chile serrano price increased annually by 33.95%, while other ingredients showed negative trends: lemon (-14.09% annually), but with an 8.3% monthly increase; onion (-18.58%) yet up 6.3% from the previous month; and tomato (-29.18% annually), -11.5% monthly.
