Breast Cancer as a Leading Cause of Death in Mexican Women

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), breast cancer was the third leading cause of death among malignant tumors in Mexican women in 2023. In light of this concerning trend, the Federal Procurator for Consumer Affairs (Profeco) released a study on the average costs of mammograms and breast ultrasounds across various laboratories, clinics, and hospitals nationwide.

Price Comparison: Variations Exceeding a Thousand Pesos

Profeco’s analysis, published in the Consumer Review, highlights significant price differences across different regions:

  • Mexico City and the State of Mexico: A mammogram can range from $295 at Salud Digna to $1,447 at Olab Diagnósticos Médicos.
  • Jalisco: Prices vary between $500 and $1,980. In Nuevo León, the range is from $550 to $1,488. Veracruz sees prices from $469 to $1,600.

Similar price variations are observed for breast ultrasounds:

  • Mexico City and Edomex: Prices range from $360 to $2,037.
  • Jalisco: Prices vary between $400 and $1,800.
  • Nuevo León: Prices range from $550 to $1,373.
  • Veracruz: Prices vary from $405 to $1,500.

Profeco pointed out that several establishments offer combined packages of mammograms and ultrasounds at more affordable prices. For instance, Diagnóstico Londres (Edomex) provides both studies for $700, while Radio Diagnóstico Imagen (Jalisco) offers them for $550. However, some private hospitals charge over $3,000 for these services.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Profeco emphasized that proactive and consistent actions are crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Although no definitive risk factors exist, the Secretariat of Health identifies four categories that may influence breast cancer development: biological, environmental, reproductive history, and lifestyle.

  • Monthly self-examination starting at age 20.
  • Annual clinical examination starting at age 25.
  • Mammogram every two years between ages 40 and 69.

Regular mammograms can detect nodules and cysts that are difficult to perceive manually, potentially making the difference between early and delayed treatment.

Healthy Habits and Informed Decisions

Profeco urged the public to embrace preventive habits and compare prices before selecting a medical service.

Beyond personal health, comparing costs contributes to financial well-being and overall wellness, especially in a context where healthcare service prices can greatly vary.

“Comparing different options and choosing what best suits your needs and budget contributes to overall well-being,” Profeco stated.

The prices were collected in August 2025, so slight variations may exist by the time of publication. For the full study, Profeco invites readers to consult issue 584 of the Consumer Review at:
