Introduction to the Hot Sale and Consumer Concerns

The Hot Sale, one of Mexico’s largest e-commerce discount seasons, kicked off on Monday, May 26th. Despite the aim of these offers being to boost online shopping, a significant portion of the population remains uncomfortable with digital transactions.

Up Sí Vale Study Reveals Low Confidence in Online Payments

According to a study by financial solutions company Up Sí Vale, 54% of the Mexican population prefers physical payments, avoiding online or remote transactions.

Moreover, only 39% of the population considers digital payment options secure, despite security measures implemented by platforms such as digital card usage.

Fraud Concerns Drive Physical Purchases

The primary reasons Mexicans opt for in-store purchases are fraud concerns, as per the National Consumer Defense Agency (Condusef). In the first quarter of 2025, 37% of received complaints were due to potential fraud.

“During high-consumption periods like the Hot Sale, digital fraud attempts surge. It’s crucial for users to stay vigilant, adopt secure practices, and enable measures like two-step verification or real-time alerts,” stated Javier Mercado Robles Aguilar, Chief of Compliance at Up Sí Vale México.

Recommendations for Safer Online Transactions

Additional recommendations to avoid such situations include avoiding payments via public Wi-Fi networks, turning off bank cards when not making a payment, and refraining from falling for enticing but dubious offers.

Regrettably, only 27% of survey respondents claimed to exclusively shop on secure and official websites, while just 24% activated two-step verification for their bank accounts.

Expected Spending Despite Concerns

Despite the significant portion of the population wary of online purchases, it’s anticipated that last year’s record-breaking 34,000 million pesos will be surpassed during this Hot Sale.

Up Sí Vale predicts that 42% of shoppers will seek supermarket and grocery products, 34% clothing and footwear, and 31% technology and electronics.
