Introduction
Choosing the right company to manage, safeguard, and invest your retirement resources is crucial as it can result in a pension that’s 25% to 30% higher or lower, according to the National Commission for Savings on Retirement (Consar).
Historical Afore Performance in 2025
The workers’ retirement savings experienced a historic year in 2025, with the resources managed by the Afores registering record gains of 1.14 trillion pesos, more than twice the public spending channeled to adult pensions.
What does this mean for your retirement?
This temporary increase in your individual account balance allows you to accumulate more savings and eventually secure a better pension in the future.

How to Determine Your Afore’s Siefore
If you were born in 1989 and your Afore is Sura, you are part of the Siefore Básica 85-89 Sura, which had an IRN of 8.44%, the second-highest among similar funds. However, if you were born in 1980 and your administrator is Coppel, you are part of the Siefore Básica 80-84 Coppel, which had an IRN of 7.02%, the lowest among similar funds.
Why is choosing the right Afore important?
Moisés Pérez, founder of Yo Jubilado Estrategias para tu retiro, explains that traditionally, three elements were considered when choosing the best Afore: returns earned, commissions charged, and services offered. However, with nine administrators charging the same commission (0.54% over balance) by 2026, Pérez emphasizes that the IRN is the most relevant factor for making the best decision.
Afore Assets Under Management
There are 10 Afores in the country, managing resources for 70 million workers totaling 8.3 trillion pesos, which represents 23.8% of the national GDP.
For the first time in 28 years, by the end of 2025, the returns surpassed the billion-peso mark, doubling the 2024 figure.
Currently, 57 out of every 100 pesos in workers’ balances are due to the returns generated by the system. Over the past year, returns increased to 16.8%, surpassing the historical average annual rate of 10.7%, as noted by the Consar.
