Background on Key Figures and Relevance
Rosa Icela Rodríguez, the Secretary of Governance, highlighted a significant milestone in Mexico’s national security strategy: providing over 2 million 22,669 services and attention to the population across 48 municipios in 10 states. This achievement is a result of the combined efforts from all three levels of government.
Collaborative Efforts and Coordination
During the Conference of the People presided by Claudia Sheinbaum, the President, Rodríguez acknowledged the collaboration with various federal and local entities including:
- Secretaría de Salud (Health Department)
- Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Defense Department)
- Secretaría de Marina (Navy Department)
- Secretaría del Bienestar (Well-being Department)
- Secretaría de Educación Pública (Public Education Department)
- Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (Security and Citizen Protection Department)
- Secretaría de Desarrollo Agrario, Territorial y Urbano (Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development Department)
- Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (Mexican Institute for Social Security)
- IMSS Bienestar (IMSS Well-being)
- Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Institute for Social Security and Services of State Workers)
- All participating departments
Disarmament and Peace Promotion Initiative
In addition to the care strategy, the “Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz” (Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace) social action continues. This initiative allows citizens to exchange firearms for cash anonymously and swap military-themed toys for educational ones.
- 2,135 firearms exchanged (1,585 short-barreled and 550 long-barreled)
- 200 grenades and ammunition destroyed
- 4,455 military toys exchanged for educational ones
Currently, 12 modules have been set up in nine states. The latest one concluded in Cuernavaca, Morelos, and the next will be in Cajeme, Sonora.
Promoting Recreation and Sports for Peacebuilding
Rodríguez emphasized the importance of recreational and sports activities in fostering peace and unity within communities. Through state and regional peace tables, as well as youth integration centers, the 18th national race commemorating the International Day Against Illicit Drug Trafficking was organized.
- 37,672 participants in 122 races across the country
- Promoted physical activity, health, and rejection of violence
Health Initiatives for Youth
Rodríguez mentioned other initiatives targeting youth, such as:
- Sexually transmitted disease prevention
- VIH and hepatitis testing
- Health and sexual/reproductive health discussions
Strengthening Community Life
Through 2,000 Peace Days, the strategy has bolstered community life via tequios (community work), preventive workshops, and promoting peace culture in families and schools.
Community Engagement through Paz Ferias and Committees
Paz Ferias create spaces for community members to engage in recreational, cultural, and informational activities while handling local tramites (transactions). Active participation through Paz Committees has led to community members taking charge of sports facilities, installing lighting, rehabilitating courts, and organizing youth tournaments.
