Background on Adán Augusto López and Ignacio Mier Velazco

Adán Augusto López Hernández, the former coordinator of Morena in the Mexican Senate, has decided to step down from his position. He will be succeeded by Ignacio Mier Velazco, a Puebla-based politician. López, who served as the Secretary of Government and Governor of Tabasco, has been an influential figure in Mexican politics.

López’s Decision and Future Plans

During a press conference at the beginning of the Morena senatorial bloc’s plenary meeting to approve the legislative agenda for the second session of the ordinary year of the LXVI Legislature’s upper chamber, López announced his departure as a political decision. He stated that he will not request leave to separate from his seat.

“The opportunity has arisen to engage in political-electoral work leading up to 2027. Today, there is a need for my full dedication, such as strengthening unity within the Movement and the party; this is something I am deeply committed to. I have been known for my territorial work, and the most important aspect is to strengthen the party and the Movement for 2027. I asked my colleagues to accept my removal from the parliamentary group,” López explained.

Mier Velazco’s New Role and Responsibilities

Accompanied by Mier Velazco, López outlined his plans to focus on political work for Morena in preparation for the 2027 federal elections. In two years, Mexico will hold elections for 17 governorships and renew the Chamber of Deputies.

“I will dedicate myself to working across the country, strengthening our position for the 2027 elections. My task will involve extensive territorial work. I will be present in almost all electoral districts with significant voter registration, and we will proceed accordingly. Our primary goal in Morena is to win nearly all 17 contested governorships and maintain a qualified majority in the Chamber of Deputies, as well as in the Senate of the Republic,” Mier Velazco stated.

Mier Velazco’s New Position

As the new coordinator of Morena’s parliamentary group, which holds the majority in the upper chamber, Mier Velazco will assume the presidency of the Junta de Coordinación Política (JCP), the highest decision-making body.
