Mexican President Urges Increased Border Security Measures
Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, reiterated her call to the U.S. government on Tuesday to bolster operations at the border to curb the illegal flow of firearms into Mexico.
“The United States needs to increase its border operations to reduce the trafficking of firearms from the U.S. to Mexico. This is a task they must undertake; they have numerous security elements at the border and all the capability to conduct necessary checks,” Sheinbaum stated during her morning press conference at the National Palace.
Mexico’s Continuous Efforts Against Illegal Arms
Sheinbaum Pardo mentioned that the Mexican government conducts ongoing seizure and destruction operations of illegal laboratories.
“We believe they should increase these activities, and we have conveyed this at the table. The reality is that illegal firearms continue to enter our country,” she emphasized.
Monitoring Sanctioned Banks
In another matter, Sheinbaum addressed the case of sanctions imposed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury on three Mexican banking institutions and assured that the Secretariat of Finance maintains close monitoring of the case, in coordination with the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), and the Mexican Bankers Association (ABM).
Sheinbaum detailed that Mexican authorities are working to ensure the security of depositors and the integrity of the involved trusts. “There are ongoing meetings to ensure depositors, particularly in the trusts of one of the banks,” she noted.
She also indicated that, as of now, there are no open investigations by the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) against the directors of the sanctioned institutions, and that the existing sanctions originate from administrative bodies like the CNBV and the U.S. government.
