Background on Claudia Sheinbaum and Her Role

Claudia Sheinbaum is the current Head of Government (equivalent to Mayor) of Mexico City, serving since 2018. Previously, she was the Secretary of Environmental Affairs and Sustainable Development for Mexico City from 2009 to 2018. Her background in environmental policy and urban development has been instrumental in shaping Mexico City’s initiatives towards sustainability and social welfare. As the Head of Government, she has continued to advocate for progressive policies and social justice.

Constitutional Reform to Limit Excessive Pensions

During a press conference, Sheinbaum announced her intention to propose a constitutional reform aimed at preventing excessively high pensions for employees of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

“We will be introducing a constitutional reform to analyze all labor rights without affecting any of their entitlements,” Sheinbaum explained. “The goal is to establish a limit on this abuse through a constitutional amendment.”

She emphasized the need to address situations where individuals received exorbitant pensions after working for a short period at Pemex or CFE, such as monthly payments of 400,000 pesos from Pemex or over 1 million pesos from Luz y Fuerza. Sheinbaum stressed that these resources should go to the people instead of a select few.

Sheinbaum clarified that the constitutional reform initiative would be presented during the current legislative period, which concludes on December 15.

Extradition Requests for Ayotzinapa Case

During the same press conference, Sheinbaum discussed Mexico’s extradition requests from the United States regarding the Ayotzinapa case.

“I brought up the Ayotzinapa case with Secretary of State Marco Rubio during our meeting,” Sheinbaum stated. “We are seeking the extradition of two individuals involved in this case.”

When asked if the names of those involved could be disclosed, Sheinbaum consulted with her security team. Following their advice to maintain confidentiality, she agreed not to reveal the identities of those sought for extradition.

Mexico’s Stance on DEA Operations

Regarding collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Sheinbaum’s office clarified that Mexico did not participate in any DEA operation resulting in the detention of over 600 individuals linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.

“There were no DEA operations involving Mexico, either as a large-scale or international operation,” Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security, confirmed.
