Overview of Crime Statistics in Mexico (January-April 2025)

According to the latest analysis by Mexico United Against Crime (MUCD), crime rates in Mexico saw a decrease in the first four months of 2025. The report highlights that while homicides, crimes against personal liberty, and family violence have declined, these offenses continue to occur across all states.

Homicides and Feminicidios

The study indicates that between January and April 2025, there were 8,982 victims of deliberate homicide and feminicide nationwide, marking an 11% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. On average, this equates to approximately 75 individuals being killed daily in the first quarter of 2025.

Crimes Against Personal Liberty

In the same period, crimes against personal liberty reported 9,326 victims nationwide, a 17% reduction from the corresponding months in 2024. Despite this decrease, certain municipalities such as Culiacán (Sinaloa), Ecatepec de Morelos (Estado de México), Benito Juárez (Quintana Roo), Naucalpan de Juárez, and Toluca (Estado de México) account for 13% of the total investigations initiated in the country, with 256,203, 197,173, and 173 investigations initiated respectively.

Sexual Violence and Family Violence

The report also mentions that 3,877 extortion victims were recorded nationwide from January to April 2025, marking a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Notably, the State of Mexico accounted for 27% of total reported victims (1,048) and four of its municipalities are among the top ten nationally with the highest number of investigations for this crime.

Political Violence

MUCD also warned of ongoing politically motivated violence as Mexico prepares for its first judicial elections and local elections in Durango and Veracruz. Between January and April 2025, Data Cívica’s “Voting Amid Bullets” project documented 182 victims of political criminal violence, including precandidates, candidates, serving officials, elected authorities, party militants, security personnel off-duty, government or party installations, and relatives of political actors.
