Heavy Rains in Mexico City Leave Five Injured; Dam in Naucalpan Overflows

Overview of the Situation

Intense rainfall in Mexico City’s Metropolitan Valley has caused significant damage and left five people injured. In Naucalpan, the overflow of the Los Cuartos dam was reported.

Mexico City Incidents

In Mexico City, the downpour resulted in five individuals being hurt due to the collapse of a barrier in the Doctores neighborhood, located in the Cuauhtémoc alcaldía. The Secretaría de Gestión Integral de Riesgos y Protección Civil (SGIRPC) issued a red alert for the districts of Álvaro Obregón, Coyoacán, and Tlalpan due to intense rainfall with possible hail and lightning.

  • Affected streets: Viaducto, Calzada de Tlalpan, Ermita Iztapalapa, and Periférico experienced severe flooding, fallen trees, and road blockages.

Naucalpan Dam Overflow

Naucalpan’s mayor, Isaac Montoya, reported that an atypical 50mm rainfall in the upper part of the dam and in San Rafael Chamapa, combined with the accumulation of debris and reduced riverbed capacity of the Rio Verde, led to the overflow near the Altamira vehicle bridge.

The foamy residue from the overflow covered nearby streets, as seen in social media images. The National Water Commission (Conagua) later reported removing 700 tonnes of debris from the dam to restore its hydrological capacity as part of emergency efforts.

Hurricane Erick’s Impact

Devastation Caused by Hurricane Erick

Hurricane Erick left intense rainfall across the country, causing floods, landslides, blocked roads, and power outages affecting 277,000 users who also lost communication services.

  • Oaxaca: The hurricane caused landslides and flooding that collapsed roads and damaged homes, schools, hospitals—especially in Puerto Escondido, Pinotepa Nacional, and Salina Cruz. One man died after being electrocuted while handling downed cables in San Pedro Pochutla. Over 30,000 power and telecommunication outages were reported in Puerto Escondido, though services began to recover quickly.
  • Guerrero: Intense rainfall led to floods, landslides, and road blockages in areas like Ometepec, Punta Maldonado, and San Marcos. The most tragic incident was the drowning of a one-year-old child swept away by a swollen river while his mother tried to cross it. There were also damages to homes, power and communication outages, school closures, and the establishment of at least 582 shelters with rescue and sanitation brigades.
  • Michoacán: As a degraded tropical storm, it brought persistent rainfall, minor overflows, and complications.
