Hurricane Lorena Continues to Strengthen
The National Weather Service (SMN) reported that Hurricane Lorena continues to intensify along the coast of Baja California Sur. As a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, it is currently located 255 kilometers west of Cabo San Lucas and 220 kilometers from Cabo San Lázaro, with maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (km/h).
The hurricane is moving northwest at 24 km/h.
Heavy Rainfall and High Waves Predicted
The SMN forecasts torrential rains in the central and southern parts of Baja California Sur due to Lorena’s cloud shedding. Sonora and Sinaloa are expected to experience intense rainfall, while very strong rains are predicted for Baja California, Nayarit, and Jalisco.
Wind speeds of 70 to 90 km/h with gusts up to 100 to 120 km/h are expected along the coast of Baja California Sur, and 40 to 60 km/h in the Gulf of California, Sonora, Sinaloa, and Jalisco (coast).
Additionally, wave heights of 4.5 to 5.5 meters are anticipated along the western coast of Baja California Sur and 2 to 3 meters along the coasts of Sinaloa and Nayarit.
Heavy Rains Expected in Central Mexico
Meanwhile, a low-pressure system and upper-level divergence are expected to bring heavy rains to central and eastern Mexico, with very strong rains possible in Guanajuato, the State of Mexico, and Puebla.
The National Water Commission (Conagua) warned that these precipitations could come with thunderstorms and hail, urging the population to take necessary precautions.
