Background on Mario Delgado Carrillo and His Role
Mario Delgado Carrillo, the Secretary of Public Education (SEP) in Mexico, has been actively involved in overseeing the recovery efforts of schools affected by heavy rains in San Luis Potosí and Veracruz. His role is crucial as he ensures the continuity of education for students in these regions.
Progress in School Recovery
- Most schools in the Huasteca region have resumed classes, reflecting the commitment and solidarity of the Potosino people.
- SEP, under President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s instructions, will evaluate and relocate schools presenting any risk to students if necessary.
- In Poza Rica, Veracruz, damage assessments are underway for some of the 303 affected schools in the state.
Delgado Carrillo expressed gratitude to parents, teachers, and the entire educational community for their collaboration with federal, state, and municipal governments in addressing the emergency and ensuring a safe return to classes.
Ensuring Student Safety
During his visit to the Huasteca region, Delgado Carrillo, alongside San Luis Potosí’s Education Secretary Juan Carlos Torres Cedillo, highlighted the positive news that most schools in affected areas have resumed classes. This outcome reflects the dedication and solidarity of the Potosino people.
Delgado Carrillo emphasized that, following President Sheinbaum Pardo’s instructions, the safety and well-being of school communities are top priorities. Schools in affected states exhibiting any risk to students will be evaluated and, if necessary, relocated to ensure the security of all students.
“The President Sheinbaum’s commitment is clear: no student should be left without education. Education is a right, and we must ensure it in dignified, safe environments with all conditions for our students’ holistic development,” stated Delgado Carrillo.
He reminded that the 62 affected schools in San Luis Potosí and the 303 in Veracruz have coverage through Agroasemex, S.A., ensuring cleaning, drainage, furniture and equipment replacement, as well as structural repairs. Additionally, the redistribution of free textbooks (LTG) in affected schools is underway to prevent any student from falling behind.
Collaborative Efforts and Support
Delgado Carrillo reiterated that SEP will continue working with state and municipal authorities to ensure all students return to classes as soon as possible, reinforcing the collective effort for a public education system that leaves no one behind.
San Luis Potosí Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona acknowledged the support provided by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s government to Huasteca residents during the crisis. He praised Delgado Carrillo’s presence in affected areas to supervise school rehabilitation efforts and ensure students’ return to classes.
