Introduction to the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN)
The Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado Carrillo, emphasized that the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) embodies a commitment to modernity with a working-class face, popular accent, and emancipatory vocation.
Mexico’s First Female Scientific President
Delgado Carrillo pointed out that Mexico now has a female scientific president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, marking the first time in 200 years of the Republic.
IPN’s Relevance and Expansion
During the inauguration of the National Congress “The Necessity of Philosophy in High School of the 21st Century,” Delgado Carrillo highlighted the IPN’s significance. The current director general of the IPN, Arturo Reyes Sandoval, reported that the institution is present in 93 academic units spread across 38 municipalities in 24 states.
IPN’s Founding and Philosophy
On the occasion of Polytechnic Day, Delgado Carrillo underscored that the IPN represents a commitment to modernity with a working-class face, popular accent, and emancipatory vocation. He recalled that when founding the IPN, General and former Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río did not view the fatherland as an abstraction but rather as a house needing reconstruction through its educational pillars.
Cárdenas aimed to form scientists with a heart of the people and technicians attuned to listening to those below them, those who were still not receiving justice from the Revolution.
Cárdenas’ Vision for Science
Delgado Carrillo explained that, contrary to those who view science as an end in itself, Cárdenas saw it as a profoundly political instrument, charged with meaning and capable of subverting colonial domination’s order that condemned millions to ignorance, dependence, or exploitation.
Cárdenas wanted a country that could walk with its own machinery, light its own fire, and explore its own land without asking permission.
IPN’s Role in Mexico
Delgado Carrillo emphasized that the IPN was founded to make knowledge accessible rather than a luxury, transforming it into a tool for sovereignty.
“The Polytechnic has been, until now, the possibility of forming scientists who do not disconnect from life, who do not ignore the child they once were or the people who formed them; technicians who question the purpose of technique and to whom it benefits,” he added.
IPN’s Presence in Puebla
In Puebla, during the commemoration of Polytechnic Day at Cecyt 20 “Natalia Serdán Alatriste,” IPN’s General Director Arturo Reyes Sandoval highlighted that polytechnics believe in both education and science, which can socially transform a nation.
Reyes Sandoval reaffirmed the institution’s commitment not only to the nation but particularly to each state that comprises it.
IPN’s Identity and Achievements
He stated that belonging to the IPN means carrying an identity rooted in social justice and national sovereignty.
“Today, we not only celebrate this identity but also the recent achievements of our institution in every corner where we are present,” Reyes Sandoval concluded.
