Background on Measles and its Impact

Measles, a highly contagious viral infection, can lead to severe complications and even death. It is preventable through vaccination, yet outbreaks still occur in regions with low vaccination rates.

Current Situation in Mexico

As of May 21, 2025, Mexico has reported 1,629 confirmed cases of measles across 17 states and 55 municipalities, according to the Mexican Health Secretary.

Tragic Deaths Due to Measles

Four fatalities have been recorded in Mexico this year, including three unvaccinated minors. The deaths occurred in Chihuahua (3) and Sonora (1), as per the Health Secretary’s report.

  • Chihuahua Deaths: A 7-year-old and an 11-month-old from the conservative Amish community (mennonites) succumbed to measles complications in early May. Both had underlying health conditions – leukemia and renal issues, respectively.
  • Sonora Death: A 1-year-old girl, daughter of migrant farmworkers, died due to severe malnutrition and lack of vaccination.

Government Response and Vaccination Efforts

The Chihuahua state government met with mennonite leaders to bolster the vaccination campaign and medical assistance. Meanwhile, the Mexican government intensified its measles vaccination drive due to the surge in US cases, particularly in Texas, which borders Chihuahua.

US Measles Outbreak and its Mexico Impact

The United States has experienced over 1,000 measles cases this year, according to an AFP tally based on public data. This outbreak has contributed to the recent measles cases in Mexico, emphasizing the importance of cross-border health initiatives.
