Key Participants and Agenda

Members from Morena, PT, PVEM, MC, and PRI attended a friendly meeting with Secretary of Finance, Edgar Amador Zamora and various subsecretaries to meticulously analyze the 2026 Economic Package. Notably absent was PAN.

Morena Spokesperson Arturo Ávila Anaya’s Perspective

According to Arturo Ávila Anaya, Morena’s spokesperson in San Lázaro, almost all parliamentary groups were present. The meeting focused on the detailed budget for the upcoming year, addressing doubts surrounding the 2026 Federal Budget Proposal.

Ávila Anaya emphasized that the budget prioritizes social programs, aligning with the government’s focus on these initiatives using a significant portion of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He also mentioned infrastructure programs, including passenger trains.

Furthermore, he addressed public debt and fiscal discipline concerning the GDP. He defended certain revenue-generating measures within the 2026 budget, clarifying that there is no tax increase but rather efforts to broaden the taxpayer base and combat tax evasion through fake invoices.

Criticism of PAN’s Absence

Ávila Anaya criticized the absence of PAN’s parliamentary group, stating that they had previously called for dialogue and communication. He suggested their absence was part of a communication strategy to perpetuate false narratives about the economic package and budget.

Morena’s Deputy Coordinator, Merilyn Gómez Pozos, noted the short notice for the meeting and praised the Secretary of Finance’s availability to receive all Commission of Budget and Public Accountability members. She expressed surprise at PAN’s supposed cancellation, as they had previously voiced concerns about a lack of openness and dialogue with the Finance Secretary.

Gómez Pozos confirmed that all political forces were invited and had the opportunity to ask questions. She mentioned the presence of Hacienda’s subsecretaries, the Income Subsecretary from SAT, and the Procurator. She also mentioned upcoming coordinated sessions with Hacienda to address working groups for budget analysis.

Gómez Pozos previewed that this was an ordered initial meeting with the Commission, and budget analysis sessions will continue as per law. The Secretary of Finance is expected to appear before the lower house on September 24.
