Michoacán’s Dominance in Avocado Exportation
Morelia, Michoacán. This year, Michoacán will ship over 120,000 tons of avocados to the United States for Super Bowl LVI, reaffirming its position as the nation’s leading agroexport state, according to Governor Alfredo Ramirez Bedolla.
Certifications and Sustainable Practices
Ramirez Bedolla highlighted that 90% of the exported avocados hold the Proforest Avocado certification, as they come from deforestation-free orchards. This achievement is attributed to the implementation of the satellite surveillance system, Guardian Forestal, established by the current state administration.
Extensive Avocado Production
For the most significant sports event in the United States, taking place on Sunday, February 8th, 68 municipalities in Michoacán known for avocado cultivation have started shipping the fruit to various U.S. cities.
The governor emphasized that Michoacán boasts over 182,000 hectares of avocado orchards spread across municipalities like Uruapan, Tancitaro, Ario, Nuevo Parangaricutiro, Tacambaro, and Peribán.
“This enables annual avocado production to surpass 1.3 million tons,” Ramirez Bedolla pointed out, highlighting that the avocado industry is a primary source of employment and livelihood for thousands of families.
Michoacán’s Diverse Agricultural Production
In addition to avocados, Michoacán leads in the production of other fruits such as lemons, guavas, strawberries, and blackberries.
Technology and Oversight
Two years after launching this certification tool, over 58,000 avocado orchards have been registered, and more than 240,000 avocado samples have been verified using technology and artificial intelligence to monitor the state’s 6 million hectares of territory.
