Overview of Cultural Events in Mexico City

The Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, unveiled the cultural, artistic, touristic, and social activities planned for the last 15 days of the year as part of the grand cultural event, “Luces de Invierno en la Ciudad“.

These activities will take place from December 20 to January 4 in the Zócalo and from December 19 to January 6 at 15 locations across Mexico City, with the aim of decentralizing culture, according to the capital’s leader. “We believe that not only the city center should be transformed, beautiful, joyful, and festive for the capital’s residents but we must also decentralize culture,” she stated.

Activities in the Zócalo of Mexico City

Ana Francis López Bayghen, the Secretary of Culture for Mexico City, detailed the activities scheduled for these holiday dates in a press conference.

The Zócalo will host a “great party” featuring 76 music groups, including tropical, son, norteña, danzón, rock, ska, urban, and sonidero genres. Among the participating groups are Las Víctimas del Doctor Cerebro and the Symphonic Choir of the Ollin Yoliztli.

Zócalo Activities

  • Concert Stage:
  • Natividad Forum with nativity scenes and storytelling daily;
  • Three decorated Christmas trees with traditional Mexican ornaments;
  • 14 illuminated sculptures depicting Christmas themes and Mexican toys;
  • The largest monumental light tunnel in Mexico (150×20 meters);
  • A monumental nativity scene;
  • 120 exhibitors selling handicrafts.

Las Víctimas del Doctor Cerebro Performance Schedule

On December 30, the Rock band Las Víctimas del Doctor Cerebro will perform a free concert in the Zócalo, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Other groups scheduled for that day include:

  • Rude Times (Selección Cuicatl) from 4:20 PM to 5:00 PM;
  • Los Korukos from 5:15 PM to 6:00 PM;
  • Out of Control Army from 6:15 PM to 7:15 PM;
  • DJ Heros from 9:05 PM to 10:30 PM.

New Year’s Electronic Music Festival

This year, the capital’s government is also preparing a grand event to close 2025 and welcome the new year. According to the information released today, a massive electronic music party will take place on December 31 along Paseo de la Reforma, near the Angel of Independence.

The event will start at 6:00 PM and feature several electronic music groups, both national and international.

  • Tlalpan: Deportivo Independencia.
  • Venustiano Carranza: Parque Aguascalientes.
  • Xochimilco: Deportivo San Gregorio Atlapulco (Pueblo de San Gregorio).

Community Activities in Peace Territories and Utopias

In addition, there will be community activities in the so-called “Peace Territories,” featuring 37 communal posadas with workshops, piñatas, theater presentations, storytelling, dance, and music from December 19 to 23, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Utopias will host 40 activities, including recitals by the Music, Theater, and Dance Initiation Schools, with all artistic activities generated within the Utopias themselves.

Furthermore, there will be 224 school Christmas exhibitions from the “Por Mi Escuela” program, which will be closed events for the public attending these schools.

Tourism Promotion

Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, the Secretary of Tourism for Mexico City, invited residents to explore their city. She also mentioned that Mexico City will close the year with 60.5 million visitors and an increase of 3% in hotel occupancy.

She encouraged residents to purchase Christmas gifts from artisans arriving from 19 Mexican states through the “Artesanos en el Corazón” program.

Colibrí Viajero Program

The Tourism Secretary explained that to conclude the Colibrí Viajero program, there will be dramatized street performances in Madero and Palma on December 21 and 28 at 3:30 PM.
