Quintana Roo’s Commitment to National Effort for Plastic-Free Coasts by 2030

Punta Brava, Puerto Morelos: At Playa Punta Brava in Puerto Morelos, with the presence of Federal Prosecutor for Environmental Protection Mariana Boy Tamborrel, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa joined Quintana Roo to the launch of the National Strategy for Beach and Coastal Cleaning and Conservation 2025-2030, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

National Endeavor for Plastic-Free Coasts

During a national link-up with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s daily press conference, Governor Mara Lezama expressed her support and gave the starting signal in Quintana Roo for this collective national effort aiming to eliminate 100% of plastics from our coasts within the next five years.

Quintana Roo’s Proactive Measures

Under the coordination of the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, and with the participation of governors across the nation, Governor Lezama highlighted Punta Brava’s natural beauty during the link-up. “We couldn’t have a better starting point for this strategy that requires commitment, courage, and foresight,” she said.

She further emphasized that in the face of the global crisis caused by plastic pollution, Quintana Roo is not idle. Since the beginning of this distinctive administration, concrete actions have been promoted such as eliminating plastics in coastal areas, environmental education programs, community recycling, beach clean-ups, and marine species protection.

Governor’s Call to Action

“Let this strategy be the starting point for a New Era for our sea, for our beaches,” Lezama stated. “From Quintana Roo, with actions and not just words, we declare that it is indeed possible. Let’s continue building together, with environmental consciousness, social justice, and deep love for our coasts as part of the Fourth Transformation.”

Secretary’s Remarks on Environmental Health

In commemoration of World Environment Day, Secretary of Ecology and Environment of Quintana Roo, Óscar Rébora Aguilera, stated that the health of our beaches reflects our relationship with nature.

“The situation we face is not easy. Environmental challenges are profound and urgent, but today we have a Governor who acknowledges this reality and acts firmly and committedly for the environment,” Rébora Aguilera declared.
