Overview and Relevance
In the first quarter of 2025, Mexico reported a total of 209 intentional homicides of minors, marking a 4.6% decrease compared to the same period in 2024 (219 cases). This trend continues from a decrease of 5% in 2023 (220 cases) compared to 2022 (261 cases), which saw a 20% increase. The highest number of intentional homicides of infants in a first quarter was recorded in 2018 and 2020, with 295 cases each. The lowest numbers were in 2015 (170 cases) and 2016 (182 cases).
Since 2015, the Redim has documented a total of 10,210 intentional homicides of minors, with 8,415 being male victims and 1,795 female. Of these, 7,096 were committed using firearms, while 2,041 involved other elements, 895 with bladed weapons, and 178 cases had no specified method.
States with Increases
The Redim’s data indicates that 12 states have experienced an increase in the number of homicides of minors during the first months of 2025.
- Sinaloa: Under the administration of Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, Sinaloa saw only one case in 2024 but has already reported 14 cases in 2025, representing a 1,300% increase.
- Puebla: With one victim in 2024, Puebla has now reported seven cases in 2025, indicating a 600% rise.
- Guerrero: The state experienced a 275% increase, moving from four cases in 2024 to 15 homicides of minors in 2025.
- Nuevo León: The state saw an increase from eight cases in 2024 to 13 cases in 2025, a 63% rise.
- Quintana Roo and Coahuila: Both states reported a 50% increase, moving from two cases in 2024 to three cases in 2025.
- Veracruz, Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Baja California: These states saw increases of 25%, 25%, 13%, and 9%, respectively.
- Yucatán and Aguascalientes: Both states transitioned from zero to one or two cases, respectively.
States with Decreases
On the other hand, Durango, Hidalgo, and Nayarit experienced a 100% decrease, moving from one case in 2024 to zero cases in 2025. The State of Mexico saw a 95% decrease, dropping from 24 cases in 2024 to one case in 2025. Oaxaca experienced an 83% decrease, falling from 24 cases in 2024 to four cases in 2025.
Other Crimes
The Redim’s data also revealed that in the first quarter of 2025, there were 77 cases of human trafficking, down from 83 cases in the same period of 2024. Kidnapping saw an increase, with 14 cases in 2025 compared to 10 cases in 2024. Extortion cases also rose from 76 in 2024 to 90 in 2025.
