Key Transportation Project Update
Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the federal chief, announced that the Tren México-Toluca “El Insurgente” will be fully operational by the end of January 2026. This high-speed train will connect Toluca, Estado de México, to Observatorio in the City of Mexico, reducing a current 2.5-hour journey to just 40 minutes.
Project Milestones
- Civil work and electromechanical components are now complete.
- Testing phase to begin and last for three months.
- Expected completion date: End of January 2026.
Observatorio: A Modern and Relevant Transportation Hub
Sheinbaum highlighted the significance of the Observatorio complex, calling it “the most modern and relevant station in the country due to its design and functionality.” This hub will integrate various transportation modes, including the Tren “El Insurgente,” Metro Lines 1 and 12, Cablebús Line 3, the Passenger Transport Network (RTP), and the Poniente Bus Terminal.
Clara Brugada Molina, the City of Mexico’s Head of Government, emphasized that this complex will transform western Mexico City’s mobility by integrating new electric routes and strengthening connectivity with the Estado de México.
Delfina Gómez Álvarez, the Estado de México governor, noted that this project directly enhances the quality of life for residents by reducing travel times, improving mental health of commuters, and providing safer and more affordable transportation.
High Capacity and Affordable Fares
Andrés Lajous Loaeza, head of the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF), stated that the “El Insurgente” train will operate with 20 trains, capable of moving up to 140,000 passengers daily.
Since its commencement of operations, the first phase of the train has transported 12.6 million people with an average of 81 daily trips and 22,000 passengers per day, according to Banobras General Director Jorge Alberto Mendoza Sánchez.
Ticket prices will range from 15 to 90 pesos, depending on the distance traveled. This is a lower fare compared to the current 112 pesos for a bus ride between Toluca and Mexico City.
A Unique Ferroviary Project
Adriana Cardona, General Director of Ferroviary Projects, explained that the “El Insurgente” viaduct spans 46.6 kilometers and is unique globally, combining beams, incline, and curvature in its structure.
The Santa Fe-Observatorio segment now has track, drainage, and catenary ready for operation. Sandy Muñoz, the on-site resident, estimated that daily users at the Observatorio complex will exceed 20,000—three times the current Santa Fe station usage.
With the full activation of the Mexico-Toluca train, the federal government aims to solidify one of Mexico’s most ambitious railway projects, focusing on improving interurban mobility and air quality in the Valley of Mexico.
