Project Overview and Key Figures
The opening of the Línea 11 Trolebús, connecting Chalco, Estado de Mexico with Santa Marta Acatitla and Metro Constitución de 1917 in Mexico City, is scheduled for May 18th. During the following week, operational tests will be conducted.
This announcement was made by President Claudia Sheinbaum during a pre-operational test ride alongside Mexico City’s Chief of Government, Clara Brugada Molina, and the State of Mexico’s Governor, Delfina Gómez Álvarez.
Innovative and Sustainable Transportation
Sheinbaum highlighted that this project is innovative and sustainable, as it features an electric trolebús system that does not produce pollution. The journey, which previously took around an hour and a half, will now take approximately 40 minutes, depending on the travel distance.
Current Construction Status
Although six stations are still under construction, three of which are for a drainage collector to prevent flooding, the decision was made to open the elevated trolebús line to improve transportation for residents in both the State of Mexico and Mexico City.
Key Stakeholders’ Perspectives
Clara Brugada Molina, Mexico City’s Chief of Government, emphasized that this project marks the beginning of a metropolitan mobility vision addressing the eastern Valley of Mexico’s needs.
Delfina Gómez Álvarez, State of Mexico’s Governor, expressed gratitude to the federal and local governments for their collaboration in transforming one of Mexico’s most important metropolitan areas.
Key Questions and Answers
- Which stations will open initially, and which are still under construction?
- What are the operational details of the Trolebús Chalco-Santa Marta?
Nine stations will be operational: Santa Marta, Parque de la Mujer, Cuauhtémoc, Puente Rojo, Puente Blanco, Parque Tejones, José María Martínez, Amalinalco, and Chalco Terminal. Three stations (Unión de Guadalupe, La Covadonga, and Ejidal) will not be available initially due to drainage work. Additionally, Teotongo, La Virgen, and Xico stations are still under construction.
The service will be available from 04:30 to 24:00. The full route takes 33 minutes in express mode and 45 minutes in regular service.
The trolebuses are fully electric, producing no environmental or auditory pollution and reaching speeds up to 60 km/h. They have a range of 75 km, allowing for long-distance travel without recharging.
Initially, 102 new units will be in operation, eventually growing to 194 trolebuses. This phase will serve 120,000 daily passengers and eventually transport 230,000 people per day.
The units are 18 meters long, equipped with free WiFi, security cameras connected to C5, braille signage, wheelchair spaces, areas for service animals, luggage racks, and priority seating for women.
