Introduction to the Gusano Barrenador Situation in Yucatán

Joaquín Díaz Mena, the Governor of Yucatán, has reported that the state’s health strategy to contain and address cases of gusano barrenador (screwworm) has shown significant progress, keeping the situation under control across Yucatán.

Current Status and Achievements

As of November 8, Yucatán has recorded a total of 1,093 cases. Out of these, 952 individuals have fully recovered, representing a 90% recovery rate. Only 141 cases remain active, all of which are under veterinary specialist supervision.

  • No animals have been sacrificed, as each one receives timely treatment and recovers within an average of five days.
  • Upon detecting the first case in Tzucacab, the state government promptly activated sanitary protocols and deployed technical personnel throughout Yucatán.
  • Currently, 26 veterinarians conduct active surveillance in affected areas, providing free, timely, and professional assistance to producers.
  • Sanitary barriers of 20-40 kilometers are established around affected zones, following guidelines from the Servicio Nacional de Sanidad, Inocuidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (Senasica).
  • Continuous coordination with ganaderas (government-supported cattle producers’ unions) ensures normal operations for all production units.

Government’s Proactive Measures and Resources

The Yucatecan government has ensured a steady supply of medications, sanitary materials, and field tools. Specialized teams directly visit ranches to provide veterinary care, technical advice, and protocol implementation support.

  • Government-provided free hotline (800 751 2100) and WhatsApp number (553 996 4462) enable producers to report cases or receive immediate guidance.
  • Yucatán is advancing in the establishment of a laboratory for sterile fly production, a crucial biological tool for the gusano barrenador’s definitive eradication.
  • Recent meetings with Senasica specialists and their recent state visit confirm Yucatán’s suitability for this infrastructure, which will also benefit Campeche and Quintana Roo.

Governor’s Commitment to Animal Health and Rural Economy

Governor Díaz Mena reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding animal health, the rural economy, and the well-being of all Yucatecan families. He emphasized the government’s dedication to reinforcing surveillance and care actions across Yucatán.
