Background on Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena
Joaquín Díaz Mena, a prominent figure in Yucatecan politics, was elected as Governor in 2024 with a mandate from over 629,000 Yucatecan voters. His victory marked a turning point for the state, embodying hope and dignity as part of the Renacimiento Maya movement. Díaz Mena’s administration has been characterized by its commitment to inclusivity, focusing on previously marginalized communities and actively listening to the voices of the people.
Key Achievements and Initiatives
Addressing Inequality
Díaz Mena highlighted that 87% of the commitments he made during his campaign are now funded and underway, even in his first year of governance. This approach aligns with the principles of Mexico’s Fourth Transformation, prioritizing public funds for people’s needs and planning for both present and future development in Yucatán.
Community Development
- Support for Women: Through the Mujeres Renacimiento program, Díaz Mena’s administration supports autonomous mothers with economic aid, which will increase to 3,000 pesos bimesterly by January 2026. Additionally, in collaboration with the federal government, they have established 31 Centros Libre, safe and accessible spaces offering psychological, legal, and social assistance to Yucatecan women.
- Education Initiatives: Recognizing education’s importance, the governor’s office has distributed over 200,000 school kits containing textbooks, uniforms, shoes, and jackets. Furthermore, the Becas Juventudes Renacimiento program offers scholarships to over 9,000 public university students who previously lacked federal support.
- Agricultural Support: After nine years of neglect, more than 750 kilometers of rural roads have been rehabilitated across over 80 municipalities, with an investment exceeding 60 million pesos. Moreover, over six thousand producers have received tools, inputs, machinery, and mechanization support. Over a thousand solar-powered irrigation systems have been installed, benefiting more than 2,200 hectares and ensuring year-round agricultural productivity.
- Small-scale Farming and Livestock: The governor’s initiatives have bolstered small-scale farming and traspatio production, supporting over 2,200 families. Genetic improvement subsidies have increased from 20,000 to 30,000 pesos per semen, and over 1,500 direct supports have been provided for ganadero hato repopulation, rescuing breeds and offering financial incentives for cow and heifer dehorning and calf weaning.
Fisheries and Healthcare
In the fishing sector, Díaz Mena’s administration has distributed over 12,000 Seguridad en el Mar kits to fishermen, including life vests, GPS radios, and emergency buttons. Furthermore, over 170 eco-friendly outboard motors have been distributed, totaling more than 16 million pesos in investment.
Regarding healthcare, the governor emphasized strengthening clinics and health centers across municipalities with over 107 million pesos allocated for infrastructure, equipment, and dignified care conditions. Additionally, 180 million pesos were invested in cutting-edge equipment, and 450 million pesos in supplies for the Alta Especialidad Hospital. The new O’Horán Hospital is under construction after over 120 years, and the new Marina Hospital in Progreso is set to open soon.
Public Safety and Infrastructure
Díaz Mena reaffirmed his commitment to security, enhancing operational capacity with over 630 new patrols and improving C5i monitoring and surveillance services. The governor also mentioned investing in a better-equipped, prepared, and community-oriented police force, with a new police training center expected to open in 2026.
The Plan Bienestar has brought public works back to Mérida’s colonias and rural municipalities, ensuring equal opportunities and dignity through nearly 4 billion pesos in infrastructure and public space improvements.
Cultural and Community Centers
Díaz Mena’s administration supports the construction of Pilares Renacimiento, aiming to establish 35 such centers across Yucatán to deliver digital education, sports, arts, and music to the people.
The Aliados por la Vida strategy has facilitated over 5,300 social delito prevention actions in schools, colonias, and public spaces, primarily in high-crime municipalities.
