Introduction to the Vivienda para el Bienestar Program
One year into Claudia Sheinbaum’s tenure as Mexico City’s president, the Vivienda para el Bienestar program has already delivered its first 80 homes, constructed by the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit) and purchased by its rightful beneficiaries earning up to two minimum wages.
Ceremony in Tabasco
The handover ceremony took place in Pomoca, Tabasco, where up to 3,000 homes are expected to be built, with an estimated commercial value exceeding 1 million pesos each, but sold for around 600,000 pesos, according to Octavio Romero Oropeza, Infonavit’s head.
“It’s important to remember that, following President Claudia Sheinbaum’s instructions, these homes are 60 square meters, featuring two rooms, a full bathroom, living room, dining area, kitchen, and service patio,” Romero Oropeza stated.
Strengthening Finances
Romero Oropeza reminded us that Infonavit’s building budget comes from its own resources, primarily formed by workers’ salary contributions.
He added that these resources have grown significantly in recent years due to the rise in the minimum wage. “Infonavit has a lot of money… today, one year into President Sheinbaum’s administration, Infonavit holds nearly 1 trillion pesos,” he mentioned.
According to the functionary, there are currently favorable conditions for more people to access home loans and, consequently, Infonavit-built homes. “This is especially true for young individuals, who now only need six months of work experience and cotization to acquire their homes.”
