Scholarships and Financial Support
Securing scholarships and financial aid is crucial for making your international study dream a reality. In Mexico, several institutions are dedicated to helping young individuals achieve their international education goals.
The UK has been the second most sought-after destination for master’s degrees, right after the US, as of late 2024. Institutions like the British Embassy in Mexico promote programs such as the Chevening Scholarship, which offers fully-funded master’s degrees, including all expenses, at any university in the UK.
In 2024 alone, there were over 1,600 applications for the Chevening Scholarship, covering master’s degrees and short-term programs in arts, culture, and creative industries (Chevening-Clore Leadership Programme Fellowship). Among the 28 Mexican recipients, this scholarship is considered one of the most competitive globally.
“Our mission is to support young Mexican students who aspire to further their education at the world’s best universities and view the UK as a partner in making a positive impact on their country. Accessible financing is a catalyst for more students to achieve their academic and professional goals,” says Kimi Yoshimura, head of the Chevening Scholarship program in Mexico.
Financial Planning
One of the most significant challenges when studying abroad is financial planning. For instance, postgraduate tuition in the UK can range from £20,000 to £60,000 per year. Additionally, the estimated monthly living cost in a city like London can range from £1,068 to £2,048.
However, there are support options that cover total or partial costs. For example, the Fondo para el Desarrollo de Recursos Humanos (FIDERH) is one such institution.
In Mexico, FIDERH has become a highly sought-after option. In 2024, it received over 1,200 applications and financed nearly 1,000 Mexican students for foreign studies. FIDERH provides educational credits with a variable annual interest rate of approximately 5%, significantly lower than traditional bank loan rates.
“I recommend creating a budget that includes tuition, registration fees, accommodation, transportation, medical insurance, visa processing fees, and personal and recreational expenses. Planning ahead ensures financial certainty and allows students to focus on maximizing their academic and cultural experience,” explains Daniel Triana, Global Institutional Partnerships from FIDERH.
English Language Proficiency
Mastering a second language not only opens academic doors but also expands professional and personal opportunities. Proficiency in English can lead to clear economic advantages, such as a potential 20% hourly wage increase, higher annual income, and easier access to better-paying jobs and bonuses.
Having a certification like the Pearson Test of English (PTE), recognized by governments in countries such as Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, ensures international standards and opens both academic and professional doors.
“This digital, reliable, and comprehensive certification allows candidates to demonstrate their English proficiency without obstacles, combining international examination standards with the flexibility students need,” it was noted.
