A pine-covered forest with a humid climate provides the ideal conditions for one of nature’s most anticipated phenomena each year: the 2025 Firefly Season. The Firefly Sanctuary encompasses 26 viewing centers spread across more than 200 hectares within the Nanacamilpa ecological zone in Tlaxcala.

When does it start?

This year, the firefly watching season officially begins on June 20 and ends on August 10. During this period, visitors can witness thousands of fireflies emitting synchronized lights to attract their mates, offering a unique bioluminescence spectacle.

Guided tours start after 7:00 PM or once it gets dark, lasting approximately 40 to 60 minutes.

Recommendations:

  • Make a reservation in advance to secure your spot.
  • Arrive on time at the ecotourism center to enjoy all activities.
  • Wear warm clothing (jacket and waterproof boots) and sturdy footwear.
  • Respect the natural environment by avoiding artificial lights, noise, and any form of pollution that could affect the fireflies’ life cycle.
  • Do not use any repellents.

Where to stay?

For those looking to immerse themselves in nature and disconnect for a few days, Rancho Buenavista is one of Tlaxcala’s most representative ecotourism centers.

The Hacienda, established in 1892, is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes that, during the summer, provide the perfect conditions for showcasing one of the year’s most anticipated natural phenomena.

Accommodation Options:

  • Eco-cabins nestled in the woods. From 3,400 pesos per night for double occupancy, enjoy a comfortable room while minimizing environmental impact, as sustainable resources are used for maintenance.
  • Glamping for those seeking comfort with a touch of nature. A recommended space for couples from 4,320 pesos per night amidst the brushland.
  • Camping in a designated and secure area (from 640 pesos per person). If you enjoy camping, Rancho Buenavista offers expansive green areas where you can set up your tent or rent one on-site.

All accommodation packages include access to the viewing center, post-tour bread and coffee, local cuisine, a morning walk, traditional breakfast, and additional experiences.

Additionally, Rancho Buenavista offers the option to purchase only an entry ticket and a guided tour for 340 pesos per person, including coffee and bread after the walk and a pulque tasting experience.

More Activities

Rancho Buenavista offers more than just fireflies throughout the year. The center provides cultural, gastronomic, and holistic activities designed to connect with nature, traditions, and personal well-being such as:

  • Maize lectures: An in-depth discussion on corn as the foundation of Mesoamerican culture, its symbolism, history, and role in contemporary farming life.
  • Pulque tasting and lecture: Visitors can learn about agave sap extraction, fermentation, and taste natural pulque in a guided experience by local producers.
