Early Beginnings and Entrepreneurial Spirit
At the age of nine, Gonzalo Acuña discovered his first business model by selling WWE trading cards to his primary school classmates. Two decades later, that same drive led him to become the CEO and co-founder of Propmatch, a Mexican proptech company that democratizes real estate investment through blockchain technology and artificial intelligence.
His story isn’t built on inheritances or connections; it’s based on questions. “My greatest strength is curiosity,” he confesses in an interview with El Economista.
Learning the Ropes
His curiosity drove him to learn from scratch how to sell, develop, and finance properties in both Mexico and the United States. After years of hard work, he now leads a company that allows people to invest in real estate starting from just 200 pesos, with the goal of enabling millions to become homeowners.
Early Career and the Birth of Propmatch
Gonzalo began by washing cars and working in a factory. During this phase, he realized that job stability without purpose wasn’t enough. He decided to venture into entrepreneurship, despite the risks and effort involved.
“In Mexico, we’re taught to ask ‘why you?’ instead of ‘how will you do it?’. That difference changes everything,” he asserts. This action-oriented mindset gave life to Propmatch: a platform that breaks down real estate properties into 10-dollar tokens, allowing anyone to invest without complicated procedures or borders.
The project originated in his room, coding lines and dreaming of a global model. In 2024, the app officially launched with partners like Amazon, Stripe, and Google. Its current valuation exceeds $162 million, with over 195 million in properties undergoing tokenization.
Mission and Impact
Beyond the numbers, Gonzalo emphasizes that Propmatch’s purpose is to open doors for those historically excluded from the real estate market. For university students, his message is clear: curiosity and persistence are more valuable than initial resources.
“I didn’t have money or contacts; I only knocked on every possible door,” he explains. Out of 100 “no” responses, five turned into opportunities that elevated him to the next level. His story demonstrates that failure is not an end but a part of the training process.
What is Propmatch?
Today, Propmatch combines financial education and technology. Through a chatbot, users can learn concepts like return or appreciation with simple examples and receive guidance on taxes, credits, and investment rules.
Gonzalo aims for one million families to become co-owners in the coming years.
Propmatch is considered by its founders as the world’s first “real estate Nasdaq“, a platform where anyone can buy, sell, or exchange fractions of properties just like stocks are traded on the stock market.
He states that each investment is represented by a token backed one-to-one by a real estate asset, providing transparency, immediate liquidity, and access to the real estate market. With this model, he seeks to familiarize people with “stock market logic,” teach responsible investing, and understand that building wealth is no longer a privilege but an achievable goal through their smartphones.
Moreover, Acuña bets on local talent. Despite receiving invitations to relocate his company to Dubai or the United States, he chose to maintain operations in Mexico.
“We want to show that global technology can be built from Guadalajara. The talent is here; we just need to believe in it,” he affirms.
Inspiring Leadership
His leadership also inspires those starting in the entrepreneurial world. He offers free mentorship to students and startups, convinced that sharing knowledge multiplies opportunities.
For him, “success is not individual: ‘One person alone can’t change anything; five committed ones can.’ In every university, in every hackathon, Gonzalo repeats the idea that led him here: curiosity is the beginning of change.
