Introduction to Guatemala’s MICE Tourism Strategy
Guatemala is actively positioning itself as a competitive destination for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) tourism. The country is highlighting its rich cultural heritage, growing air connectivity, and a strategy centered on authenticity, sustainability, and proximity to Mexico to attract international visitors. At IBTM Américas 2025 in Mexico City, Harris Whitbeck, Director of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT), emphasized that the strategy focuses on cultural authenticity, sustainability, and community integration.
Guatemala’s Cultural and Natural Diversity
Guatemala boasts a great cultural and natural diversity within its compact territory. INGUAT has developed community-based tourism products that offer visitors authentic experiences not found in other regional destinations. Whitbeck stated, “In a small country, we concentrate multiple cultural, natural, and gastronomic experiences, making us a very competitive destination.”
Air Connectivity and Hotel Capacity
A significant advancement for Guatemala’s positioning is the strengthening of air connectivity. In 2024, over 208 million flight searches from Mexico to Guatemala were recorded, with a substantial increase in available seats by the end of that year. Recently, a direct flight to Bogotá was opened, and Montreal-Guatemala will begin in October, the first of its kind, facilitating traveler arrivals from Canada and Europe. Ciudad de Guatemala is also advancing in convention center projects and new hotels, with six licenses already approved.
Responsible and Sustainable Tourism
Sustainability is another crucial aspect of Guatemala’s strategy. INGUAT promotes community-based tourism as a responsible development model, avoiding overtourism and protecting natural and cultural resources. Whitbeck explained, “We want international events to be developed under responsible tourism standards, with direct benefits for local communities.”
Mexico and Guatemala: Natural Allies
Geographical proximity and cultural ties with Mexico are vital for Guatemala’s tourism growth. In 2024, 110,870 Mexican visitors explored Guatemala, a 26% increase from the previous year. Mexican travelers are particularly interested in gastronomy (34%), culture (40%), and family experiences (22%).
Digital Innovation in Tourism
INGUAT is also investing in digital transformation and artificial intelligence, along with big data analysis, to understand traveler behavior and improve public-private sector communication. Whitbeck concluded, “Today, we have tools that allow us to make more informed decisions and optimize Guatemala’s tourism promotion.”
