Seattle Mariners Closer’s Strategic Financial Planning

Andrés Muñoz, the Mexican baseball star and closer for the Seattle Mariners, has recently secured a substantial salary increase, elevating his earnings from $2.68 million to $7 million for the 2026 season. Despite being under 30 years old and having a promising career ahead in Major League Baseball (MLB), Muñoz has chosen to prioritize financial investments, such as real estate.

Background and Achievements

Muñoz has been a standout figure for Mexican sports in 2025, coming close to leading the Seattle Mariners to their first-ever World Series appearance and his professional baseball career’s pinnacle. Although the Mariners fell short in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, Muñoz’s performance and the team’s decision to exercise his contract option for 2026 have brought him significant rewards.

  • Born in Sinaloa, Muñoz has earned $7.5 million since his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres in 2019.
  • The salary increase for 2026 will push his earnings to $14.5 million.
  • He is under contract with the Mariners until 2029 and will be eligible to negotiate a new deal in 2030, following his strong performance in 2025 and potential participation in the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) for Mexico.

Maturity and Long-Term Vision

Muñoz’s maturity is evident in his focus on both his present athletic career and future financial stability. He emphasizes the importance of financial education for athletes, many of whom suddenly find themselves with substantial income without proper knowledge of how to manage it.

“There are countless stories of people who earn a lot but don’t know how to manage their money… It’s crucial that there is financial education from now on so everyone can learn how to handle sudden wealth,” Muñoz told El Economista during a visit to Mexico City.

Influence and Advice

Muñoz has received advice from experienced MLB players like Edwin Díaz and Aroldis Chapman. However, the most influential figure in shaping his financial outlook has been fellow Mexican pitcher Joakim Soria, who played in the MLB from 2007 to 2021.

“Joakim Soria motivated me to think beyond baseball and invest in areas like real estate for a more secure future,” Muñoz shared with the publication. “I’ve been receiving great education and advice in this area, and I believe it will be very beneficial for me.”

Real Estate Investments

Muñoz is currently exploring real estate investments, following in the footsteps of other Mexican athletes such as boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, cyclist Jessica Salazar, and soccer player Katty Martínez.

“If you have an education, you’ll know how to think about the future. Maybe it won’t benefit me immediately, but buying a property will generate rental income… I’m just absorbing as much knowledge as I can, step by step,” Muñoz explained.

Athletic Goals

Despite his focus on financial planning, Muñoz’s primary athletic goals remain winning the World Series and representing Mexico in the WBC. However, his proactive approach to financial stability sets him apart from many athletes who prioritize their careers over long-term planning.
