Background and Relevance of the Players

Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s top-ranked tennis player from Belarus, advanced to the WTA Masters final in Riyadh after defeating American Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on Friday. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, ranked 6th globally, secured her spot in the final by overcoming fellow countrywoman Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Semifinal Matchups and Player Performance

Sabalenka, who has been in excellent form this season, showcased her resilience by winning three consecutive matches in the group stage to reach the WTA Masters final. Rybakina, who won Wimbledon in 2022, has been on a career-best run at the WTA Masters, participating for the third consecutive year.

Rybakina aims to secure her third title of 2025 in Riyadh, following her victories at the WTA 500 events in Estrasburgo (clay) and Ningbo (hard court).

In a grueling match against Pegula, Rybakina had to fight hard for her third win in six games. “It was a tough battle, always very difficult playing against Jessica,” Rybakina commented after her victory.

Trailing 4-6 in the first set, Rybakina served for the second set but Pegula broke back and had multiple chances to equalize at 5-5. However, Rybakina saved those opportunities and secured the break to close out the set 6-4.

In the third set, Pegula managed to come back despite being a break down, but Rybakina regained her serve and eventually sealed the victory with her serve after more than two hours of intense play.

Sabalenka’s Path to the Final

Sabalenka’s journey to the final was equally intense, as she faced Amanda Anisimova in a hard-fought semifinal. After giving up two breaks in the first set, Anisimova eventually succumbed to an unforced error after an hour of fierce competition.

Once Sabalenka seemed unstoppable, Anisimova began to find her rhythm and put pressure on the Belarusian player. After failing to convert any of her first five break-point opportunities in the first set, Anisimova broke Sabalenka’s serve twice in a row, securing a comfortable 4-0 lead and winning the second set 6-3.

The decisive third set was closely contested, but in the seventh game with a 3-3 score, Sabalenka finally broke Anisimova’s serve. The world number 5, who had previously lost to Sabalenka in the US Open final in September, couldn’t regain momentum and suffered her fifth defeat in 11 matches against the Belarusian player after 2 hours and 21 minutes of play.
