Introduction to Carlos Beltrán and His Career

Carlos Beltrán, a powerful former hitter for the Mets and Astros, was elected on Tuesday as one of the new members of the Baseball Hall of Fame alongside Curacao’s Andruw Jones.

At 48, Beltrán receives this recognition in his fourth year of eligibility for a remarkable two-decade career in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Career Highlights

  • Ambidextrous hitter who played both outfield and infield
  • Retired in 2017 after winning his only World Series title with the Houston Astros
  • Nine-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner
  • 435 home runs and 312 stolen bases in his career

Beltrán’s Legacy and Impact

The Puerto Rican becomes the sixth player from his country to be immortalized in Cooperstown, following Roberto Clemente (1973), Orlando Cepeda (1999), Roberto Alomar (2011), Iván Rodríguez (2017), and Edgar Martínez (2019).

Beltrán’s induction ceremony will take place on July 26.

Andruw Jones Joins the Class of 2026

The Baseball Hall of Fame also announced Andruw Jones as a member of the class of 2026, alongside American Jeff Kent, who secured his spot through a special vote by the Contemporary Era Committee in December.

Jones, a five-time All-Star and ten-time Gold Glove winner, will be the first player from Curacao to receive this honor for his distinguished career with teams like the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Yankees.

Voting Results

Beltrán received 84.2% support from the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) panel, while Jones garnered 78.4%.

Candidates Who Did Not Meet the Threshold

Among the 27 candidates, each needed at least 75% of the votes to be selected.

Dominican star Manny Ramírez fell short at 38.8% and missed his tenth and final chance to be inducted into Cooperstown.

Despite his impressive history, including two World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox (2004 and 2007) and twelve All-Star appearances, Ramírez’s candidacy was affected by multiple suspensions for using banned substances.

Beltrán’s reputation was also impacted by his sudden resignation in January 2020 from the Mets’ manager position due to his involvement in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal during the 2017 World Series.

Appointed only three months prior, Beltrán never coached a single game for the Queens franchise.
