Introduction to Isabella Fierro
Isabella Fierro, a 24-year-old Mexican golfer, has rapidly risen to prominence in the sport. Born in Mérida, Yucatán, she honed her skills at Oklahoma State University, where she earned a degree in Sports Management. Fierro made her professional debut in 2022 and quickly gained attention after securing her first professional victory at the Toyota Classic in 2023. She has since established herself as the third-ranked Mexican female golfer in the world, with a strong presence on the LPGA Tour and Epson Tour.
Fierro’s Emotional Intelligence and Mental Strength
Fierro emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence in her game, going beyond the typical mental fortitude required in golf. She explains to El Economista, “For me, staying calm doesn’t mean being serious; it’s about breathing and staying present. It’s easy to forget the here and now, especially for Latina golfers like us who often get caught up in future possibilities rather than focusing on the present.”
Working with a Sports Psychologist
To further enhance her mental game, Fierro began working with Chilean sports psychologist Eugenio Lizama Codocedo in recent times. He also supports other golfers, including Gaby López, Joaquín Niemann, Carlos Ortiz, and Mito Pereira, as well as extreme sports athletes in automobile racing and motocross. Fierro acknowledges that Latina golfers, including herself, may struggle more with emotional intelligence due to cultural factors compared to their counterparts from other regions.
Managing Emotions on the Course
Fierro highlights the challenges Latina golfers face in managing emotions during high-pressure situations, such as major tournaments or crucial moments in a round. She explains, “As Latinas, we tend to be more emotional, which can be both a strength and a weakness. While it’s great to have passion and enthusiasm, there are times when you need to stay calm and focused, like during a major championship or when trying to make the cut.”
Consistency and Long-Term Focus
Fierro aims to improve her consistency on the course, acknowledging that her journey has had its ups and downs. She shares, “Last year, I experienced many highs and lows, with some excellent weeks followed by challenging ones. My goal is to play as consistently as possible, which requires continuous effort and practice.”
Recent Achievements and Future Goals
Fierro has participated in 23 LPGA Tour events in 2024 and is currently back in the Epson Tour with the determination to return to the LPGA Tour. She is one of four Mexican golfers competing in the Riviera Maya Open, an LPGA Tour event returning to Mexico after a six-year absence. Fierro’s current ranking as the third-best Mexican female golfer (428) places her behind only María Fassi (358) and Gaby López (58).
