Background on the Israel Premier Tech Cycling Team
The Israel Premier Tech cycling team, recently targeted by pro-Palestinian demonstrations during the Vuelta a España, has been excluded from the Giro de Emilia in Italy due to security concerns, according to an announcement by the race organizer.
Race Organizer’s Decision
Adriano Amici, president of GS Emilia, the race organizer, stated that the team would not be participating in the 199 km race between Mirandola and Bolonia on October 4th. The decision was made “for reasons of public safety,” Amici explained.
“The environment is highly tense, with too many risks for both Israel Tech riders and others,” Amici justified. “With our final circuit, which must be completed five times, the chances of disruption to the race are significant.”
Although Amici regretted the decision from a sporting perspective, he felt it was necessary for public safety. The Giro de Emilia serves as a precursor to the year’s final monument, the Giro di Lombardia, taking place on October 11th.
Political Pressure and Protests
The City Council of Bologna, controlled by the Democratic Party, had previously requested the team’s exclusion. They argued that “the Israeli government is guilty of serious crimes against the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.”
Roberta Li Calzi, Bologna’s Sports Councilor, supported the decision: “Given the situation in Gaza, it would have been hypocritical to consider the presence of a team linked to that government as insignificant,” she stated in a press release.
Recent Protests Against the Team
During the latest Vuelta a España, several stages were shortened due to protests, and the final stage in Madrid was canceled because of mass demonstrations against “Zionist genocide” in Gaza and the team’s participation, Israel Premier-Tech, owned by Canadian-Israeli billionaire Sylvan Adams.
Premier Tech, the team’s co-sponsor and bike supplier, has requested a name change to continue supporting the squad while removing any association with Israel.
