Singles and Doubles Triumph Reinvigorates Italian Tennis
Jasmine Paolini has penned a perfect story at the Italian Open 2025, becoming the first Italian tennis player in four decades to win both singles and doubles titles. This remarkable achievement propels her to the fourth spot in the global rankings.
Singles Success
Paolini clinched the singles title by defeating American Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-2 in a match lasting one hour and twenty-nine minutes. This victory makes her the fourth Italian woman to win the singles title at this WTA 1000 tournament, following Lucia Valerio (1931), Annelies Ullstein-Bossi (1950), and Raffaella Reggi (1985).
“It’s a dream come true, pure joy,” Paolini said after her singles final. “I try to convey my passion for this sport in every match and leave everything on the court. To play one of my best matches ever today is incredible.”
This is only Paolini’s third singles title on the WTA Tour, following her victories at the WTA 250 in Slovenia (2021) and the WTA 1000 in Dubai (2024). On her way to the Rome singles title, Paolini overcame Lulu Sun, Ons Jabeur, Jelena Ostapenko, Diana Schnaider, and Peyton Stearns before defeating Coco Gauff.
Paolini credited her parents for their unwavering support, stating, “I owe a lot to my parents; they’ve always given me the freedom to make my own decisions and supported me in everything I did. Thanks to them, I’m here and can help grow tennis in Italy. I hope the sport continues to receive this much attention.”
Doubles Dominance
Just 24 hours after her singles triumph, Paolini repeated the celebration in doubles alongside compatriot Sara Errani. The Italian pair had previously triumphed in Roma 2024, defeating Coco Gauff and Erin Routliffe 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. In 2025, Paolini and Errani overcame Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova and Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-4, 7-5.
According to the WTA website, Paolini’s victory broke two records: first, she is the first player to win both singles and doubles titles at a single WTA 1000 tournament since Vera Zvonareva in Indian Wells 2009; second, Paolini and Errani are the first to win consecutive doubles titles in Rome since Ashleigh Barty (with Demi Schuurs) in 2018 and 2019 (with Victoria Azarenka).
“It’s been two incredible weeks. I don’t know what to say, it’s simply perfect. I wanted to write a beautiful story for Rome,” Paolini, 29, added.
The last Italian to win both singles and doubles titles in Rome was Raffaella Reggi in 1985, who triumphed in doubles alongside Sandra Cecchini and defeated American Vicki Nelson-Dunbar in the singles final.
Financially, Paolini earned $1,008,999 for her singles title, while Errani took home $352,475 for their doubles victory.
Paolini now has eight doubles titles, and Errani boasts 32. Notably, seven of Paolini’s doubles titles have been won with Errani, placing them sixth in the WTA world rankings for doubles pairs.
