Luis Álvarez and Alejandro Hernández Advance to Octavos de Final

For the first time in the history of the Abierto de Tenis de Los Cabos (ATC), two Mexican tennis players, Luis Álvarez and Alejandro Hernández, will compete in the octavos de final of the singles draw.

Background on the Tournament

The Los Cabos Open, an ATP 250 tournament, was first held in 2016. This year marks its ninth edition, with the 2020 event being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mextenis, the tournament’s organizer, has been awarding wildcards to Mexican players throughout its short history.

Mexican Players’ Recent Achievements

Alejandro Hernández previously reached the octavos de final in 2022, defeating Colombian Nicolás Barrientos before being eliminated by Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime. This year, Hernández and Luis Álvarez are making history by advancing to the octavos de final.

Hernández secured his spot on Monday by defeating Japanese player Taro Daniel 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Meanwhile, Álvarez, a 20-year-old from Mexico City, secured his victory over Australian James McCabe 6-1, 6-2 on Tuesday.

Upcoming Matches

On Wednesday, Álvarez will face American Aleksandar Kovacevic (ranked 76th in the world) for a spot in the quarters of final. Kovacevic has reached the quarters in the last two editions of the Los Cabos Open, making Álvarez’s match a challenging one.

Simultaneously, Hernández will take on top-ranked Russian Andrey Rublev (currently 10th in the world) for a place in the quarters. Rublev, who has no prior experience at the Los Cabos Open, will make his debut in this tournament. His only previous appearance in Mexico was at the Acapulco Open 2018, where he lost in the first round to Spanish player David Ferrer.

Additional Mexican Players in Action

Three more Mexican players will participate in doubles matches on Wednesday. Santiago González, who recently won three grass court titles, will team up with American Austin Krajicek against Jamie Cerretani and Theodore Winegar.

Manuel Sánchez and Hans Hach will also compete in doubles, facing each other. Sánchez will partner with Australian Bernard Tomic, while Hach will team up with Colombian Cristian Rodríguez.
