The national football team of the Dominican Republic has shown significant evolution and will be a tough opponent that Mexico must face flawlessly in the Gold Cup, according to Mexico’s head coach, Javier “Vasco” Aguirre.
Mexico Kicks Off Gold Cup Defense Against Dominican Republic
Mexico, ranked 17th by FIFA, will start its Gold Cup title defense on Saturday against the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
“They’ve experienced rapid growth compared to 40 years ago, earning a great place in football, and I’m genuinely happy about that because they’re competing on merit,” Aguirre said during a pre-match press conference.
“We must respect ourselves and our opponents; we can’t underestimate anyone. There are countless football stories of teams underestimating their rivals, so we need to play an almost perfect or perfect match. We don’t want to leave anything to chance; we must execute flawlessly,” he added.
Context and Rankings
Mexico, ranked 17th by FIFA, seeks its ninth Gold Cup title, while the Dominican Republic, ranked 139th by FIFA, makes its debut in the CONCACAF tournament.
“I hold the Dominican Republic team in high regard; I don’t believe it will be a match where we score 15 goals. We have 90 minutes to score one more goal than them while respecting them from the start,” Aguirre pointed out.
