Introduction

The Mexican National Team, known as “El Tri,” has trimmed its player pool from 60 to 35 for the upcoming summer tournaments, the last official set before hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada.

Main Additions: Hirving Lozano and Guillermo Ochoa

The most notable inclusions in Javier Aguirre’s updated roster are Hirving “Chucky” Lozano and Guillermo Ochoa, both experienced players who had been sidelined by the coach in recent times.

Hirving “Chucky” Lozano

Lozano, who last played for Mexico on March 25, 2024, in the Concacaf Nations League final that Mexico lost 0-2 to the United States, has not had the chance to play under Javier Aguirre. At that time, Jimmy Lozano was the coach.

Since Javier Aguirre’s third stint with the national team, Lozano missed the Concacaf Nations League 2024-25 quarterfinals, semifinals, and final, along with six friendlies. His absence dates back to Jimmy Lozano’s tenure when he left Lozano out of the Copa America the previous summer.

Since 2025, Lozano has been a player for San Diego FC in the MLS United States, scoring five goals in 12 matches. He joined for over $12 million to sign a seven-and-a-half-year contract in Europe.

At 30 years old before this summer, Lozano aims to be part of the final Gold Cup squad with his 70 appearances for Mexico. This will be the last official tournament before the World Cup.

In February of this year, Lozano reaffirmed his availability for the Mexican National Team: “I have always said, I am always available for the National Team. I love going and of course, I will be there whenever they call me.”

Guillermo Ochoa

Even more experienced than Lozano, Guillermo Ochoa returns to the Mexican National Team as one of the four goalkeepers called up by Javier Aguirre, not only for the Gold Cup but also for a couple of friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland before the competition.

Ochoa, who turns 40 on July 13, has attended the World Cups since Germany 2006, Sudáfrica 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and Qatar 2022. The América academy player remains determined to become the first footballer in history with six World Cup titles.

This season, Ochoa has played 23 matches and conceded 45 goals with AVS, a team fighting to avoid relegation in the Portuguese league playoffs.

Unlike Hirving Lozano, Guillermo Ochoa has worked with Javier Aguirre during his third stint as national team coach. However, he was not called up for the Concacaf Nations League Final Four in March 2025 against Canada and Panama, being replaced by Luis Ángel Malagón.

One of the goalkeepers in Aguirre’s recent call-up will have to be left out for the Gold Cup, which only registers three players in that position. Ochoa hopes to stay due to his World Cup experience and 11 years in Europe.

Other Convocated Players

The rest of the players called up by Aguirre for this summer window include defenders: Jorge Sánchez (Cruz Azul), Julián Araujo (Bournemouth), Emilio Lara (Necaxa), Israel Reyes (América), César Montes (Lokomotiv Moscú), Ramón Juárez (América), Juan Sánchez Purata (Tigres), Gilberto Sepúlveda (Chivas), Johan Vásquez (Genoa), Jesús Angulo (Tigres), Jesús Gallardo (Toluca), Jesús Orozco (Chivas) and Mateo Chávez (AZ Alkmaar).

Midfielders: Edson Álvarez (West Ham), Luis Chávez (Dynamo Moscú), Marcel Ruiz (Toluca), Erik Lira (Cruz Azul), Orbelín Pineda (AEK Atenas), Gilberto Mora (Tijuana), Carlos Rodríguez (Cruz Azul) and Jeremy Márquez (Atlas).
