Background on Patriots’ Recent Struggles and New Leadership
The New England Patriots built one of the most powerful dynasties in NFL history between 2001 and 2018, tying the Pittsburgh Steelers with six Super Bowl titles each. Quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick became synonymous with legends during that period, making the Pats internationally recognized.
However, the fairy tale ended with Tom Brady’s departure at the end of the 2019 season, followed by Bill Belichick’s farewell in 2023. Brady’s departure was the most impactful, as the team missed the playoffs for the first time in 11 consecutive seasons after a 2020 postseason absence. Although Brady returned in 2021, the Patriots were eliminated in the Wild Card round. The lights went out in 2023, with a 4-13 regular season record – the worst since 1992.
Eliot Wolf took over as general manager in 2024 and tried Jerod Mayo as head coach, but the results remained unchanged.
Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye: A New Era for the Patriots
Hope begins to emerge in 2025 with Mike Vrabel succeeding Mayo and Drake Maye unexpectedly taking on a prominent role as the starting quarterback, following unsuccessful attempts with Cam Newton, Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe, and Jacoby Brissett at that position. Tom Brady left an incredibly high bar for any successor.
“Mike Vrabel’s success, in large part, can be attributed to his strong emphasis on culture and identity throughout the organization,” says Luis Obregón, producer and talent for Mundo NFL, the official NFL channel in Spanish, to El Economista.
“Vrabel, having been a player for the team and Belichick’s disciple during his best years, carries that school’s spirit. He always had the mindset of being very close to his players, almost willing to go through a wall for them. He commits deeply and builds reciprocal relationships that make a significant difference.”
Patriots’ 2025 Season Performance
With three weeks left in the 2025 regular season, the Patriots are second in the AFC with an 11-3 record, trailing only the Denver Broncos’ 12-2. They hadn’t reached double-digit wins since 2019, their last season with Brady.
Drake Maye, in just his second NFL season, is leading the charge. At 23 years old and a North Carolina alumnus, he was the third pick in the 2024 Draft.
“Despite limited experience, Maye has performed exceptionally well, earning MVP conversation alongside Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen. He’s at that level with a not-yet-complete roster but driving the offense and making it explosive,” Obregón adds.
The Influence of Tom Brady on Patriots’ Quarterbacks
—How much weight does Brady’s legacy still hold over Patriots’ quarterbacks?
“It’s undeniable. He’s an outlier, especially when measured by achievements. When you’re the quarterback promised to replace or follow in his footsteps, it can be intimidating to a certain extent. It depends on the quarterback’s mental fortitude – whether they view it as fear or something to admire and learn from,” Obregón explains.
Areas for Improvement
The Patriots haven’t advanced past the Wild Card round since 2018 and have been surpassed by the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and even the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Super Bowl chase.
This season, they’ve achieved a 10-game winning streak but lost to the Bills in a direct divisional battle for the lead. The Chiefs’ elimination opens the door for other teams to vie for AFC prominence, though none have shown consistent performance.
“You can find flaws in the style, roster, or balance of any of the seven to eight teams currently vying for playoff spots. The Patriots are a great example, being a very young team with an inexperienced playoff quarterback and a favorable schedule,” Obregón notes.
“There are a couple of areas for improvement. First, they need to play at the same intensity for 60 minutes. By Week 15, the Patriots score more points in the first half (16.7) than in the second (10.6). They’ve faced weaker opponents, taking advantage early and relaxing in the second half.”
“The other area is improving their roster, particularly at receiver. They’ll need to address this through scheme adjustments.”
With matchups against the Ravens, Jets, and Dolphins remaining in the regular season, the Patriots aim to secure a playoff berth and reclaim their glory days under Drake Maye, now carrying the torch from Tom Brady.
